“Good, but we have got much better for the same price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

The room and the restaurant were very nice. The view to the water hole from the restaurant terrace made the place very special too.
The game drives were excellent, we went with two different rangers, Riian and Hannes, who were very passionate, and we spotted amazing stuff, like 3 lion chubbies, 3-months old, or a group of about 50 elephants with lots of calves.
The food was overall good, sometimes reaching great (meat), sometimes going so-so (dessert). For such a standard, I would also expect more than rusks before the morning drive.
The service was not really the strong point: the waiters kept telling us that it was their last service before going home for some days, expecting a tip, and strangely, we would see them the next day again... That part was not really pleasant.
Also, we stayed 3 nights there, so spent about 1000 euros, and they never replaced the soap/shampoo/body lotion/ bottles of water that we got on the first day. We had to pay even the bottles of water, and since we drink a lot, we ended up paying about 40€ in 3 days for water, ridiculous!
All in all, it was good, but for the same price, we got some incredible service at another place (Nkomazi), with all beverages included for dinner and in the room, much more luxurious and exclusive accommodation, real nice food, also before the morning game drive and during the drive breaks, welcoming drinks after each game drive, free bush walk or mountain biking with guides, clean blankets for the game drives, great waiters... We would go back to the Rhino lodge for the game tours, but not the service provided.

We have just spent three days at Black Rhino Game lodge. Wow! Great accommodation, good food, fabulous staff and a highly competent ranger. The Lodge manager, Steve, went out of his way to look after our family - we were travelling with an 84yr old Gran, who they took special care of. The rooms were beautiful and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff at the lodge. Hannes, our ranger was organised, informative and fun. We experienced great sightings and the elephant were definitely the hi-light of the trip - but so were the Lion - and the Rhino and and and.....Fabulous! We will be back.

Room Tip: We stayed in the satelite camp - provided wonderful privacy for a group of 9

I went to South Africa for business in January and extended my trip to go on safari. Unfortunately, I must eat a gluten free diet. Fortunately, this was not a problem for the two wonderful chefs at Black Rhino Game Lodge, who prepared delicious selections for me at every meal. I was spoiled rotten and I fell SO in love with Black Rhino on my visit in January, that I went back again in July and brought nine colleagues with me! We had all attended an international conference in Johannesburg and we were looking forward to an adventure. Manager Riaan D. and his outstanding team did not disappoint. Staff went above and beyond to make our experience incredibly special. The cabins are inviting and elegantly appointed, especially the bathrooms. An enormous fire is kept roaring in the fireplace of the main lodge on chilly winter mornings and evenings, making you feel even more welcome and cozy. Game Rangers Andre and Riaan J. are engaging, and they are very passionate about sharing their extensive knowledge of the wildlife and the beautiful wilderness. Each game drive was an exceptional experience and we were privileged to see many animals and birds. Most memorable for me were the herds of elephant that came to drink and play at the watering hole behind the lodge. Elephants were frequent visitors to the watering hole, yet every occasion was breathtaking to watch and I will never forget them.
Each one of us intends to return to South Africa, and we are all planning to spend more time at Black Rhino Game Lodge. See you soon!

Room Tip: All the cabins are beautiful!

A weekend at Black Rhino Game Lodge, enjoyed from 17-19 August 2012, was unforgettable. On behalf on Johan and I, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the staff for a truly extraordinary experience this weekend, at Black Rhino Game Lodge. The facilities and service experienced were outstanding. A special mention must be made of Riaan, who was remarkable and is highly recommended as the individual who makes every game drive very special. Keith was a gracious and professional host. The accommodation was superb. The food was very good.

We look forward to visiting again and have already recommended this lodge to numerous people.

The potholes for 5km before the entrance, is tricky but really worth the effort to traverse. The local municipality has quotations to repair the road.

We were fortunate enough to recently spend a week-end at Black Rhino Lodge, what an amazing Game Lodge. The staff were so gracious, Albany treated us like royalty. We also really enjoyed Keith and Giles, who was professional and warm and always humble. Even though we went to Black Rhino on one of the coldest times of year. We saw so much, we saw Rhino, Elephants, Buffalo and were pampered all the way, after our game drive we would be greated with hot towels, after getting off the landrover. Hannes was our game ranger and his passion and enhusiasm for the bush was contagious. The actual lodge was immaculate and the atmosphere so warm and appealing. Our room, was amazing and it was truly an "out of Africa" experience. I have been to many other lodges and it can be compared to Londolozi and Sabi Sabi. It was the perfect getaway for a family. at such affordable rates. The food was also excellent and we would definately go back.

We stayed there for three nights and it was so awful there we spent most of our time outside of the Park, as the service was poor, amenities like the fireplaces in the rooms were not allowed to be used, the bathroom leaked and the water was left there covering the bathroom floor for the whole day. In front of the bedroom were double doors and in front of it are outside table and chairs, however the doors cannot open anymore,so they are usuless, everyday we would move the table and chairs to the side entrance so it is reachable, however, the staff would move it back every time -duh!!! The aircon did not work, so the rooms were very cold and we had to sleep in warm clothes to try and get warm. The restaurant served for most of the time cold food that might have been kept warm by warm-plates. The Game Drives & Ranger was the worst I've ever been on. The Ranger was driving to fast, had a bad attitude, ate all the guests snacks on the picnic stops and we saw nothing. The rooms looked very nice when we arrived there and we were looking forward to the Safari, but this was a total waste of 4 days and money. hope that no one else has to experience the same we did.....

Room Tip: stay far away, book elsewhere.

We stayed here three nights in January 2011 and it was the highlight of our 19 days in South Africa. We booked a special offered through mt.beds.co.za, and the price was so reasonable (less than half what we had paid at a very upscale lodge in Madikwe) that our expectations were not high.

This is not a "big-name" lodge that is written up in travel guides and web sites, but the luxury and amenities rival the more expensive lodges. Our room was huge (loved the outdoor shower) and the food was outstanding. There were only two other groups at the lodge when we were there and the chef asked us in advance what we wanted on the dinner menu (ask for the wildebeest steaks).

Our guide, Riaan, was very knowledgeable and obviously loves his work, He went out of his way to travel to remote parts of the reserve and track down the "Big Five". On the six drives, we had three lion sightings, one so close that I could hear the three lions breathing as they walked by our Range Rover.

There was much more to see in Pilanesberg and the adjacent Black Rhino reserve, and if we ever travel to South Africa again, we'll go back to the Black Rhino lodge.
