“Unforgettable Game Lodge Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2012

From being greeted by Keith when we arrived to the individual attention we received from our Game Ranger and Guide Riaan, the service and attention to detail at this lodge were impeccable.

Set amongst Tamboti trees and overlooking a watering hole this is the perfect location for a game lodge. Our individual lodge was huge and well appointed with a verandah looking into the rugged bush. While we were out on our evening game drive the heaters were turned on so we returned to a warm room which was most welcome after the chill which quickly descends once the sun goes down in winter.

Close encounters with lion and elephants on our game drive were thrilling and scary but the confidence and expertise of our Game Ranger driver put us at ease. We learned many interesting facts about the animals we saw and increased our appreciation for the African bush.

We would have loved to stay longer!

Room Tip: All are private. Rms 6 and 7 have the furthest walk to the main lodge. The path is lit at night and...

We just spent two nights at this fabulous game lodge! Wonderful service and attention from check-in until departure. The staff here are very well trained and always have a smile and are very pleasant. The accommodation is very good - individual lodges have large rooms - bathroom has a full size bath, a double shower as well as an outdoor shower. All meals are served on a large deck overlooking a water hole where we saw elephants and water buck. Food is excellent - we enjoyed all of our meals and the price of wine and drinks were very reasonable. We went on 3 game drives with our guide Hannes who was excellent - very knowledgeable and ensured that we got the most from each game drive. We were very lucky to see a black rhino, white rhinos, lion and two lionesses, elephants, giraffes, zebras, kudu, impala, water buck, steenbok, wildebeest, a quick sighting of a small leopard and an amazing sight of a kill of a small kudu by 7 of the wild dogs (apparently there are only 8 on the 60,000 acre reserve) - cannot recommend this experience enough to anyone wanting to stay at a small game lodge with excellent service and staff.

Room Tip: We stayed in Lodge 7 - it was a little walk from the restaurant but good exercise to try and walk of...

We stayed for two nights at the Black Rhino resort for two nights and couldn't fault it in any way.
The accommodation is superb, the rooms are huge and have all the amenities you could want including an outdoor shower which was lovely in the early morning sunlight.
The food is superb. Breakfast is somewhat limited in choice but the pastries and eggs are very well cooked. The lunch and dinner make up for it, however. Lunch is supposedly 'light' which means your rump steak or lamb chops are served with a salad rather than potatoes etc. The dinner is a 3 course meal, beautifully prepared and served outside on the decking near the water hole as the sun sinks and the air is full if the sounds of the bush.
Of course, a stay in a game lodge is totally dependent on the sfari trips. We took three with the same ranger, Andre for each. Within the first ten minutes of the first trip we had seen a group of young lions eating a wildebeest and it just went on from there. They were very flexible as we had to leave early on the second morning, we had to miss one trip so they organised an extra long session the previous afternoon - we spent over six hours out and saw loads.
Black Rhino is highly, highly recommended.

My wife and I stayed at the Black Rhino Safari Lodge for 4 days in early January and had an amazing experience. Due to various reasons we had to book at very short notice and so were initially allocated a room in the satellite camp which is approx 0.5miles from the main building.

The staff however are more than happy to transport you via golf buggy and are available whenever you need (my only negative on this point is that phones in the rooms would be useful to call for a lift if required at times other than breakfast/lunch/afternoon drives). Our room was very large and immaculate, the only slight oddity is that the bathroom is behind a wall seperating it from the main room (I think this was room 10-4 but can't completely recall) with no doors to the room. We moved to one of the rooms right by the main building for our last night and whilst a little smaller, it is nice to be able to walk to the restaurant and have a more traditional WC arrangement with a door ! Only other slight gripe is that the plunge pool at the satellite camp is tiny and filthy however I think these units are now owned by people other than Black Rhino so am not sure they can control this - the pool at the main building is well kept but again a bit small for more than 5 or 6 people.

The catering at the resort if first class and absolutely no complaints, the bar is also reasonably priced which was a pleasant surprise ! The main lodge building is beautiful and overlooks a watering hole which meant we spent many lunches watching animals drink whilst they were no more than 40/50 metres away at the very most.

Our Land Rover was guided by Rhiaan who is a great guy and very knowledgeable - we had a total of 7 drives with him and each one was absolutely brilliant; we got very close to 4 of the big 5 and it was just the leopards illusive nature which meant even Rhiaan could not find them. We also spent time chatting with Rhiaan in the evenings although again, one masive mistake by the Black Rhino in our opinion is to prevent the game rangers from having a couple of drinks with their guests; we have previously done two safaris and both were enhanced by being able to sit down for sun downers with the rangers and hear proper 'tales of the bush', we were also not impressed the management have the rangers serving drinks/dinner to guests - they are trained professional guides and we felt a little embarassed that they were also asked to be waiters. None-the-less we got on great with Rhiaan and have offered to show him the 'wild life' of London should he ever come to the UK !

Overall the Lodge was amazing and we cannot recommend enough; it did initially seem a little pricey but when you realise how much it includes and the calibre of accomodation and staff is represents fantastic value for money.

The only thing that would probably stop us returning is simply that we love trying new places; if the Black Rhino could replicate itself elsewhere then we would be there in a shot !

Room Tip: I would recommend flexibility in when you go in order to stay in the main camp rather than satellite...

My one problem was having to say good bye to Craig and his dedicated team at Black Rhino. From the moment I arrived I was made so welcome, the lodge is everything and more you could ask for. The game drives were all very well manged the rangers are good fun and are experts on any topic. As I stayed for 3 nights I was able to go out on a walking trek with one of the rangers. A great way to get out and up close it really enhances the overall experience. Overall it was a great way to chill out and relax, zero stress, well after I recovered from the shock that the resort does not have wifi. Yes you can survive for a few days without email !!
Well done to everyone at Black Rhino, if I don't ever return it will be my loss.
