My wife and I stayed at the Black Rhino Safari Lodge for 4 days in early January and had an amazing experience. Due to various reasons we had to book at very short notice and so were initially allocated a room in the satellite camp which is approx 0.5miles from the main building.
The staff however are more than happy to transport you via golf buggy and are available whenever you need (my only negative on this point is that phones in the rooms would be useful to call for a lift if required at times other than breakfast/lunch/afternoon drives). Our room was very large and immaculate, the only slight oddity is that the bathroom is behind a wall seperating it from the main room (I think this was room 10-4 but can't completely recall) with no doors to the room. We moved to one of the rooms right by the main building for our last night and whilst a little smaller, it is nice to be able to walk to the restaurant and have a more traditional WC arrangement with a door ! Only other slight gripe is that the plunge pool at the satellite camp is tiny and filthy however I think these units are now owned by people other than Black Rhino so am not sure they can control this - the pool at the main building is well kept but again a bit small for more than 5 or 6 people.
The catering at the resort if first class and absolutely no complaints, the bar is also reasonably priced which was a pleasant surprise ! The main lodge building is beautiful and overlooks a watering hole which meant we spent many lunches watching animals drink whilst they were no more than 40/50 metres away at the very most.
Our Land Rover was guided by Rhiaan who is a great guy and very knowledgeable - we had a total of 7 drives with him and each one was absolutely brilliant; we got very close to 4 of the big 5 and it was just the leopards illusive nature which meant even Rhiaan could not find them. We also spent time chatting with Rhiaan in the evenings although again, one masive mistake by the Black Rhino in our opinion is to prevent the game rangers from having a couple of drinks with their guests; we have previously done two safaris and both were enhanced by being able to sit down for sun downers with the rangers and hear proper 'tales of the bush', we were also not impressed the management have the rangers serving drinks/dinner to guests - they are trained professional guides and we felt a little embarassed that they were also asked to be waiters. None-the-less we got on great with Rhiaan and have offered to show him the 'wild life' of London should he ever come to the UK !
Overall the Lodge was amazing and we cannot recommend enough; it did initially seem a little pricey but when you realise how much it includes and the calibre of accomodation and staff is represents fantastic value for money.
The only thing that would probably stop us returning is simply that we love trying new places; if the Black Rhino could replicate itself elsewhere then we would be there in a shot !
