“"Utopia"”
Reviewed November 10, 2011

I stay at the Protea Hotel for about 20/30 nights every year for business, I am yet to find anything negative to say. The manager runs a tight ship and always goes the extra mile, the staff are friendly, well trained and very efficient, (they even remember patrons names!) The rooms are clean and it is always a pleasure to visit this extra special establishmnet.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms away from car park (on pool side) and away from office on ground floor should be avoided!

it is nice to confirm Tripadvisor's rating of this hotel as Number 1 in Mafikeng. We stayed at both major hotels in Mafikeng between 1st September - 5th September. The rooms at the Protea are neat, smell good, the food is excellent and the staff are helpful. We were a family of two adults and two children(ages11 and 13 years) and will be going to Mafikeng every 2 months. We have found the right place to stay and have no intention of looking for any other place.

We stayed at the Protea Hotel Mafikeng from the 13th/14th July 2008. My party consisted of two adults and two children (aged 9 and 7 years). The purpose of our visit to Mafikeng was to visit sites associated with the famous siege of 1899/1900. The Protea Hotel is not situated in the town centre but is reasonably close. It appears to be a new property and has a modern and upmarket feel to it. Parking is secure.

We only stayed for one night, which in hindsight was a mistake because I quickly grew to like the establishment. We stayed on a Sunday night and it was quite apparent that the hotel was far from full. I formed the impression that the hotel caters mostly for business type people. The children did make use of the outdoor pool even though the water was freezing.

In the evening we were practically the only diners at the Mafika Restaurant, Protea Hotel Mafikeng. We ordered from the enticing menu only to be informed that some items were not available. I remembered the ten-page menu’s on Russian Railways, which were in themselves a Soviet fiction. Still the food at Protea was very good and staff attentive. I had a little chuckle when the cheese plate came with individually plastic wrapped pieces of cheese. I suppose that having huge reserves of fresh food in stock is not economical if the hotel is empty. But as I said, overall we had a good meal.

In the morning I feared that pickings might be slim but I need not have worried. Staff laid on a breakfast buffet spread that could have fed Baden-Powell’s defenders. Not only quantity but more importantly quality. Seldom have I experienced such a quality breakfast in a hotel. The South African sausages, both beef and pork, were first rate. We had freshly prepared omelettes, which complemented the sausages, bacon, fried potatoes, spiced mince (could have been chilli) and various other supporting dishes. They even had Mrs Balls famous original chutney (a South African favourite of mine). I washed it all down with a pot of tea. Morale was high.
