Walk around the old village at no charge, the old shop fronts, banks, diamond buyer's building, pubs and houses all give a great "old world" feel. A bowling alley and a mining simulation, scratching through a bucket of rubble for diamonds and prizes are great for the kids.
The tram ride is a bit of fun for R10 per person. The tram will not run without 4 passengers, so you may need to wait. It doesn't go anywhere noteworthy - just out the gate, down the street and back, treating you to a view of graffiti covered calls and dirty walk ways.

You pay to enter the main building, to see the hole etc.
- The 20 minute VIDEO is well made and very informative. Good to have a black and a white perspective on the diamond rush.
- The BIG HOLE VIEWING AREA - the deepest open cast mine to be dug entirely by hand - is quite impressive. You get a very good view from a walkway and view point. The view point does feel a little instable and wobbles a little!
- An UNDERGROUND simulation is great.
- The EXHIBITS are very well put together. The walls, putting diamond discovery into a world history context, are fascinating.
- Great to see some real diamonds in the VAULT - who knew there were so many colours.

We visited on a Friday, in the middle of a spurt of public holidays and there were no tour guide options. While self tour is quite easy, it seems wrong to pay full price and not receive the full package. They did not even have a map or guide sheet as these had run out.

This was a really interesting journey back in time. De Beers has put a lot of effort into making an authentic experience.

If you look at the big hole just keep in mind that it is the biggest man-made hole ever. If you think how hard the people who created that hole must have worked you should appreciate what you see in front of you. You get the sense of an old mining town when you vist the village that was created. You can go for a tram ride which you cannot do anywhere else. Visit the diamond city - it is an unique experience. There is also a tour into the mine itself. Go for it.

I could cite a lot of things but to summarise: The open air mining museum was good. Just a pity that the Long Cecil canon was not there. The static display and the tour through the mimicked mine experience was so cool!!!!!! It is a must. Then there was the town. Although some static displays were not great all in all it was super and much fun!!! A must to do!!!!
