“coming back for the third time!”
Reviewed May 17, 2010

Protea Kruger is a fantastic hotel. The food is ok, the staff is friendly and the rooms are clean and comfortable. This year we are coming back for the third time!

We were there as part of a Saga tour.
Was very welcoming and in our room there was two small bottles of water and two apples and two peaches left for us.
The room was very comfortable and as seems usual in South Africa there was Tea and Coffee making facilities in the room.
Dinner , a buffet, where we had a salad starter then a selection of meats including Beef, Pork and Lamb. We also had fish, Yellowtail, and it was simply delicious. Dessert was too much, with Trifle and Crème Caramel to name but a few, and we really enjoyed it.
Breakfast was quite a good selection but even though the chef had a large hotplate to work with he only did one thing at a time so seemed slow if one was in a hurry.
South Africa seems to be famous for being a meat eating nation and that is certainly reflected in the amount of meat you are given at each meal. The same can be said of fish.
The service was quite good and the atmosphere was pleasing.

Perfect location if you want to visit the Kruger Park. Beautiful lobby, courteous and efficient staff and good size rooms. Wonderful to dine under the stars in the 'boma' and hear the animals from the bar on the river bank. Be aware that the hotel is quite old so while the rooms are large, the bathrooms are not modern. The wine list unfortunately does not reflect South Africa's finest wines and should be upgraded. But, great value for money overall.

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for a week and we had a fabulous time. Initially, I was a bit hesitant based on the moderate reviews on tripadvisor but I can say that it was definitely worth it. This hotel is relatively inexpensive. We loved the food and the decor in the common areas. Staff were courteous, polite and had great customer service. The rooms were ok but we spent most of the day either in game drives, sitting on the deck watching the elephants, drinking or eating with the monkeys nearby. I would definitely say to take the time to walk over to Kruger gate and buy your tickets for the game drive. Unfortunately, we didn't see much during our morning drive. We would highly recommend the evening drive though. We saw 4 of the Big Five. There are also lots of activities at the hotel like mini-golf and other games. I have been to several hotels on the continent and I must say that this was one of the best experiences yet.

Loved the treehouse feel and the corral area for dinner. G&Ts by the river in the arvo ... fantastic view watching the elephants. My son lost his breakfast to a very cheeky monkey and that made his trip.

It is a shame that the rooms haven't been updated or cleaned much though - mouldy bathrooms and absent towels (we had the same problem in another Protea hotel).

Overall, we had a great time. If you are not expecting 5 star rooms and you'll be out most of the day anyway, what does it matter. Word of warning though . . . check your bill carefully - one of the bar staff tipped himself more than the bar tab on one of the checks. Luckily I noticed on checkout. It was hard for the hotel to argue when the tip was 4 times greater than the cost of the drink, and not in my handwriting.

I could not wait to get home so I could write a review for this hotel! I know I was a little worried about staying here as some of the reviews were so-so. I could not disagree more...this hotel is FANTASTIC!! We stayed here 2 nights in February 2010 and wished we had stayed one more night! You can not get any better than this location which is just outside the park. You can see the gate from the property and they have large decks and towers (tree forts) you can sit in that overlook Kruger Park, and we were fortunate to see the same elephant that hangs out in the area every day!

Rooms- We found our room to be perfect. We had a spacious room with french doors that overlooked a grassy lawn area. The rooms are basic yes, but we did not travel to Africa to hang out in our room.

Food- We were very happy with the buffet dinners and felt there was a wonderful variety. Also, the breakfasts were great too. The prices on lunches and drinks etc. were very affordable and the staff was very attentative.

I very highly recommend this hotel as it feels like you are staying in a large tree house within the middle of the jungle. They have really cool walkways and passages that lead up to these towers which provide spectacular places to watch the sunset or just read a book.

Lastly, I do not feel that the photos on here do this hotel justice so I will try to post some soon!

Lovely hotel and great set up in amongst the jungle! I wouldn't say that the room quality matched up to the communal areas but as you get to bed late and are up at unmerciful hours for the game drives you don't spend a whole lot of time in them to be fair. Staff were polite and corteous and the food was pretty good. They have a dinner under the stars one night which was fab evn though there were little critters everywhere. Recommended for proximity to Kruge park (3 min drive) but would try somewhere else if returning!
