“Fantastic place to stay”
Reviewed June 26, 2008

Its over eighteen months since we were on our honeymoon in SA.I really should have posted this review before now but i suppose better late than never. We flew into Durban airport got our hire car and drove the 3 hour(approx) trip to St. Lucia. We were very pleasantly surprised by the high quailty of the roads and the considerate driving of the SA people(far easier country to drive in than most european countries). When we got to St lucia we were both very tired and very hungry so we decided to stop for something to eat in one of the restaraunts on the main street where we got a lovely meal for a very resonable price,I can honestly say we never had a bad meal in our three weeks in SA.When we got to the Zulani guest house which was easy to find we met June who turned out to be an absolutely wonderful host,we stayed in the honeymoon suite which was beautiful and had choclates and champayne,June was unbelievably helpful during our stay organising all our trips as well as making packed lunches for us on the all day safari.I really cant speak highly enough of June who let us use her beautiful home and the things in it as if they where our own.I forget the name of the man who took us on the safari but he was brilliant as well, we got to see all of the big 5 which was amazing.
After we left St lucia we flew to PE drove the garden route over the course of 5 or 6 days, stayed in the winelands, camps bay and finally finshed up staying on the V&A waterfront for the last few days,it was all brilliant but i must say nowhere did we recieve as warm a welcome and enjoy ourselves as much as much as we did in Zulani and St Lucia (some of the other places we stayed in cost 5 times as much to stay in).
I have never had as good a time in any country as i had in SA everything was perfect,i was a bit worried before we went about the safety but we never had any problems.I cant reccomend June and the Zulani high enough and when we go back to SA we will defintly be staying there again.

June will take care of you. That is a guarantee. She made arrangements for two tours, packed an enormous breakfast (it was enough for lunch as well) when we left for an early morning jaunt to Hluhluwe, and made sure everything was perfect. The room was nice. The bathroom was amazing. The breakfast was all you could ask for. The only thing that was lacking was a decent selection of television stations.

The Zulani is located just a block from the main street of town and there are several restaurants within easy walking distance. June will give you her recommendations.

We stayed for just over a week at Zulani and would highly recommend it. We were looked after brilliantly by June with all the help we needed in arranging local tours by email before we arrived and using the very best guides available in the area. If we are ever go back to St Lucia we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again. We stayed in the honeymoon suite and we found flowers, chocolate and wine laid out for us on arrival. There is also a fridge in the room, which was great for bringing wine back if we did not want to go out later in the evening and keeping snacks cold. Also Zulani has a good collection of modern DVD’s to watch if you fancy a quiet evening after a long day on a game drive or whale watching.

June is a wonderful hostess and made our stay truly memorable. Thank you very much.

While being close to all the main attractions, Zulani is just a1 block off the main strip. June made our stay undescribable. She made ALL our reservations herself. She asked what we wanted to do, how we wanted to do it, and gave suggestions on how to make the best use of our time. Her breakfasts are over the top and she even drove my daughter and I to horseback riding, since my husband is deathly allergic to horses! Her friendly spirit truely makes one feel welcome. I usually like to try different places when I travel. However, if I am ever lucky enough to make it to St. Lucia agan, I would definitely stay w/ June. Location = GREAT, food = GREAT, personal attention = GREAT, facilities = GREAT! Thanks, June....we still think of you!

We particularly wanted to visit the St Lucia area to visit the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park to see giant turtles and lots of hippo's (my favourite animal).

My husband found Zulani Guest House on the internet by chance and we booked 5 nights. On arrival, it felt as if we were staying in a mini-safari lodge! Lovely entrance hall with wooden animal carvings everywhere. We stayed in the Leopard and Rhino rooms which were decorated accordingly.

June our hostess was warm, hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. After 2 weeks of travelling around South Africa, we were getting fed up with take aways and restaurant meals, June offered us full use of a lovely communal kitchen and it was great to have some home cooked meals from fresh, local produce. Beautiful breakfasts and fresh juices were included in our tariff.

The St Lucia Ski boat club is a MUST! Lots and lots of hippo's around just meters away and the club is only 2 minutes from Zulani, a beautiful treat at sunset when the hippo's are out. June arranged all our trips prior to arrival and via email, which were all excellent and included scuba diving, night safari, morning safari and township tour. The township tour was fantastic and very interesting. We felt totally safe and accompanied by a local guide did a walking tour of the township. We visited a local school, shebeen (bar), sangoma (witchdoctor - told my fortune, intersting!) and we also had a traditional meal with a local family.

In terms of restaurants, June recommended the curry at the Ski boat club, which was homemade, lovely and very inexpensive! The local ocean basket chain is also very good and there is a deli in the high street, which supplied us with picnic baskets and light, healthy lunches. I mentioned that I liked June's apron and on our day of departure, she had made me a Zulani apron with the name Zulani embroidered on. I now proudly wear this on the day or two when the sun shines and we are able to have a BBQ in London! A fabulous trip, accommodation and hostess all round! Highly recommend.
