Owner description: This estuary is part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park and includes fishing, hiking tours, boat tours and a crocodile center. The crocodiles make swimming an ill-advised idea.

St Lucia is absolutely the perfect combination of wildlife, scenery, birdwatching and the beach. I highly recommend it.

The wetland area is the hippo capital of the world. Beautiful scenery, 1200 hippo's and 900 crocs . Visit Cape Vidal for a swim and enjoy the wildlife and birds in the area .
Don't miss the boat trip and hippo's in town at night

This is a surprisingly wonderful place for those who like being in a remote area with great wildlife, flora, fauna and birds but close to a small town (St.Lucia) with all the necessary facilities and good accommodation. You can enter the iSimangaliso Wetland Park for a small fee and take a leisurely and wonderful drive on a single road right upto Cape Vidal. Along the way make sure you take the tracks off the main road and visit the backwaters. Sometimes you'll drive along a side road and come to a place where you can park and watch the hippos in a pool and the birds flitting around; totally magical. Along the road are various animals and birdlife. You can spot Zebra, Eland and Kudu. You can get out at Cape Vidal and just sit under the trees next to a great beach and watch the people doing their beach thing; you can also snorkel there.
Just remember the area is enormous (34,566 hectares. The site is the largest estuarine system in Africa and includes the southernmost extension of coral reefs on the continent) but a lot of it is really out of bounds.
Don't forget to bring your binoculars and camera and plenty of suncream; it can get very hot here.

This has to be one of the best places to go on holiday. Pristine Beaches, Game Drives night and day through the iSimangaliso Wetland Park with Shakabarker Tours is a must. Pretty town and loads of excellent restuarants to choose from. A world class holiday destination. The weather is perfectly warm all year round.
