Owner description: From end May till December the mighty 40ton Humpback Whales migrate alongs the KwaZulu Natal coastline to breed and calf, this is where legal permit holder, Advantage charter operates their boat based whale watching operation since 1998! Our staff is highly trained as qualified marine skippers, they will handle the boat with care, being a surf launch there is always a safety issue, so please do not be upset if the captain is very strict. The Captain's word is law!! This trip is a direct high energy surf launch and we need 3 hours of your time to complete the tour - within season you are Guaranteed to see a Humpback Whale, if you do not see a whale you get 40% refund after the trip - In case of bad weather, rough sea, Sandbanks or tidal issues trips can be cancelled at the last minute - we will not cancel a trip just for no reason, so please respect our decision if we cancel a trip - your R$'s is our income, so obviously we prefer to do the tour and take you out and let you see those magnificent whales and other ocean mammals, but sometimes we do have to cancel trips - we will not tolerate people fiddling around with cameras and backpacks if we have to launch and give our safety briefing - and our captain will have to be strict - IF there is any concern about an equipment issue, my competent staff will deal with it there and then, fixing everything before we head out to sea - and if this results in a delay , please just bare with us - this is not an easy operation as we have a surf launch and no harbor, so we will sometimes encounter hassles on the each, but we have done this since 1998 so we know what we are doing - it is also a very expensive operation, so in the beginning of the season if we do find we have only limited clients we will make the decision to cancel the trip as it might not be financially viable - we appreciate you using our web page to have all your questions answered and do a direct online booking - We also have the legal iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority concessions for 2hour hippo/croc boat cruises and deep sea Game Fishing - find much more daily pics and description on FB under St Lucia Tours

This tour group are the most established in the area. They are professional and passionate and in my opinion, the best!

We went with Advantage on their whale watching tour at 6am - the early morning trips were the most recommended when we asked around in St Lucia. We were extremely luckly with the weather and were able to launch from the beach as soon as we arrived and the ride through the waves was exhilirating, even in fairly calm weather. It was amazing to go out on a boat with only 10 people on board - my boyfriend has been whale watching before in the US where there are 100s of people. We spotted the first mother and calf within about 15 minutes, and Ben, the captain, was able to get really close. We then saw about another 10 humpback whales in various groups, some of which played a bit and showed their tails. Ben also went to see the bottle nosed dolphins - if you see them, ask to sit on the bow of the boat, as they race the boat, and you can see them under the water - a beautiful experience. Ben was extremely knowledgeable, and we were lucky enough to see a lot of whales on the day. I would highly recommend Advantage and the trip, but you need to be aware that there is a risk you may not see very much at all dependent on the whales and the weather, but this is not in the control of Advantage! And take your sea sickness tablets if you get motion sickness - the boat rocks a lot when still!

We chose to do the Advantage Whale Watching tour because they claimed to be the only organisation licensed to come close to the whales. We booked the day before the trip. At arrival the next day we were told that the trip would have a delay of 20 min. It turned out to become a delay of 2 hours. They had some mechanical problems with the boat. Because of this we started our tour at 3 pm instead of 1 pm and in wintertime this is not ideal because daylight already starts to become less from 16 h onwards. The whale watching was dissapointing even though it should have been according to the ticket office 'peak season'. We saw whales only from a distance and once the boat tried to come close, the whales dived and didn't show up anymore. We may not have been lucky. Overall, we did spend with 2 adults and 3 kids quite a bit of money to do the trip. Kids get no discount if they have a fixed number of seats on the boat and overall we did spend more than 400 euro for a boat trip of 2 h which we hoped for to be one of the highlights of our trip.

We just returned from a trip to St. Lucia, South Africa and had a negative experience with Advantage Whale Watching Tours. There were just two of us and we signed up for one of the whale watching tours. When we arrived for the tour we were told our tour was canceled due to bad weather although the weather seemed just fine to us. We had our doubts but signed up again for a tour they had scheduled for the next day.

Again, our tour was canceled. The manager of our bed and breakfast called Advantage to find out why. She, too, felt the weather was not the real reason. She learned that Advantage doesn't want to do the tour with only two customers.

Well, we were traveling in the "low" season and everywhere we went tourists were few in number. This is the seasonal nature of the travel business. Regardless, every other firm and place of lodging honored their commitments to us even when we were the only two customers they had at the time.

If Advantage Tours only wants to operate with a minimum group size, they owe it to their customers to make that clear in their advertising.

I planned our time in St. Lucia around the whale watching experience and was very disappointed by how Advantage Tours treated us.
