“Stylish, secret hideaway”

A beautiful place to stay! The charming and friendly owners tend to every detail themselves, making the quality of the guesthouse impossible to fault.
The focus is on minimalistic style - the rooms are huge, super stylish and the bathrooms are amazing.
The highlight is the swimming pool, which was the best we saw anywhere on our travels in South Africa.
Highly recommended, and can't wait to return. As the name suggests, we left feeling relaxed and, as the name suggests, serene !

Having browsed the net for hours before leaving the UK, we were so pleased Serene-Estates surpassed our expectations. It is on the very edge of the village with views into the park, and easy walking to the Estuary and the ocean, and only a few minutes by car to the village centre. Olga and Hans were perfect hosts, nothing was too much trouble to help with our holiday. The rooms were spacious and spotless, and we loved the co-ordinated colour schemes. To look from our room across the pool to the National Park and see the wild life was fantastic, only sorry we missed the visit from the Hippo's, but we did see where they had been. Loved breakfast under the gazebo, (not something we get to do in the UK) and every day it was different. When Hans finishes his building they will have a most unique Guesthouse.

After returning home to South Africa from our busy life in Las Vegas USA (new home) as newly weds, we were welcomed by the warm hospitality of Hans and Olga at this one of a kind Guest House. The room was spacious and relaxing with the lighting and ultra modern features, yet walking 50 yards you may be face to face with a hippo or some other beautiful wildlife in the garden. Nature meets comfort. The wonderful breakfasts prepared every morning under the gazebo allowed us time to plan our days with helpful info from Hans and Olga...the turtle tour is a must see!!!

After just three days we were sad to leave, but have made some new friends in St Lucia and look forward to seeing the new additions when they are completed.

Far and away the best accommodation in St Lucia. I stay somewhere else only when Serene Estate can’t put me up. There are only four guestrooms, but they’re very generously sized and superbly designed and appointed in a minimalist style, with clever and thoughtful features: a large well-lit desk, ceiling fan and air-conditioning, plug points on the veranda, a decent vanity slab, full-size bath and shower, separate WC, etc. Olga and Hans are caring hosts. Olga serves a delightful breakfast in an outside gazebo overlooking the pool and garden on the edge of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. I can’t wait for Hans to finish building the public areas – bar, breakfast room and lounge - which, based on what’s already there, will no doubt be terrific!

Somewhere on the internet we came across 2 possible places to stay in St Lucia on the KwaZulu Natal coast - this was one of them (don't know how we chose it!) and it was wonderful.
The fence between the garden and the Coastal National Park is about 1 foot (30 cm) high - that really is enough to keep the hippos out!
The owners, Olga and Hans have built the most amazing place using light and form - the bedrooms are incredible for being colour-themed: for once I wll agree that design and comfort actually can complement each other! - indeed in this case the combination is outstandingly successful (helped by some of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in).
They are still extending the building though fortunately the work is all out of sight (another 2 floors being added to the other side of the house - due to be completed within the next year). None of the work is visible from the rooms or the garden.
Lodging is strictly B&B but there is no shortage of restaurants within a mile or so catering to all tastes.
We will definitely go back again!

  • Liked — The enormous rooms
  • Disliked — Lack of internet facilities - they know they need it but it's not yet easy to provide in South Africa
