“Relax and enjoy at Kingfisher Lodge”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

We had a fantastic time while staying at Kingfisher lodge. Went for a walk and saw red duiker coming onto the property.
Michelle and her staff really spoilt us and made my birthday celebrations special. She organised a boat trip for us on the river to see the hippos, crocks and fish eagles. What a great experience.
Michelle is a great host and very willing to help you plan your time in St Lucia to have great fun. The whole experience was great value for money. We enjoyed staying here.

We atayed at this hotel for 4 nights and what alovely place to stay , I was apprehensive about ataying as I normally stay in either 4 or 5 star hotels so I thought I was going to stay in someones house but I was wrong the bedrooms are seperate from the house so you are completly private and only use the house for breakfast or as we did you can use the patio for a barbeque or relaxing around the pool. we had heard about the Hippo that sometimes visits for a drink and we were not dissapionted as a mother and baby hippo turned up the evening we were having the barbeque.... As for the Proprietors Michelle and Dave they were so friendly and even booked all our trips for us, we went Whale watching (AMAZING) on a 12 hr Safari (FANTASTIC) horse riding in the bush and even a Sunset cruise where we must have saw at least 100 Hippos..
I would highly recommend to anyone thinking of visiting South Africa to stay here for at least a week Thank you one again Dave and Michell EWE SHALL BE BACK Barbara& David

We had a warm welcome asking for a room for two nights. My Wife a me loved the beautyfull garden and the nice decorated rooms for living and breakfast.
We saw so many Hippos during the boat tour and even on Mainstreet in Town in the evening that not seeing them in Michelles garden did not disappoint us at all.
The breakfast ist very good and the room was clean and very nice decorated.
Thank You for this nice stay at Kingfishers Lodge.

Firstly the room was very very dirty, the linen looked dirty with brown spots and old pillows. The Mosquito net extremely filthy, brown and dusty.
The experience was awful, didnt get value for my money at all.
Toilet seat very old and toilet brush exposed with brown dirt, and behind the toilet as well looked very unhygienic.
The towels did not smell fresh at all. They looked very dirty.
My experience was truly horrible, only to wake up with a huge black spider in the sheets.

Lovely lodge at the edge of St. Lucia. The lodge and the rooms are surrounded by a beautiful garden and the patio has a great view on the estuary. Both evenings of our stay we enjoyed are wine and the slurping sounds of hippos drinking from the pool, first night 3 at once! And crying bush babies. A wonderfull (slightly scary) experience! Rooms were lovely decorated and clean.
As others have mentioned the plumbing in the bathrooms need to be up-dated. But I would definitely come back again!

Our first trip to St Lucia with the express intention of exploring the region with the intention returning at a later stage for a more detailed viit. Kingfisher Lodge was a great choice because it is located in a secluded corner of the village and tucked into the edge of the forest. Yes, be very careful of the hippos at night! Loved the sounds of the bush babies calling at night. Dave and Michelle were great hostsand the room great. Thanks guys and hopefully see you soon for a return visit.

The excitement could not be contained on our way to St Lucia after reading the 'guide book' to the Kingfisher lodge, it sounded a perfect place to see Hippo's! And Michelle sounded like the ideal host, from what we read. However none of this came to fruition! Never have we been so disappointed with our stay in South Africa until the Kingfisher lodge. Where to start? The rooms, we had 4 rooms between us all. My room, for at least one/two days didn't have any electricity, instead of calling a trained electrician, Michelle opted for Dave to 'fix it', who flicked the fuse off and on and then left without checking if we had electricity, surprisingly that didn't work! Still no electrician was called and we had to get changed and ready in a different room, which was very cramped! Philip then fixed it, a few hours later and we seemed to be dumped with the blame that we put the fan on and subsequently had our remote removed from our room! What the point in having a fan if we're not allowed to turn it on and change the temperature if it was too hot in the room. Another night or two we spent without warm water or in one case no water at all, to which my cousin had to wash her hair with the swimming pool water! The rooms were also dirty; bed sheets with stains. One last gripe about the room is that for the time we were there, the cups and glasses in our room were never cleaned, even though they were used daily and the milk was never changed leading to a pretty horrific smell. That's enough about the rooms. The location was fine, nice and quiet location, with just a walk to all the restaurants and cafe's, even though we were wrongly put off walking due to meeting a hippo on the way, when each night we saw people walking back and forth! Saint Lucia itself is amazing, so much to do in and around it; Safari's, Cape Vidal, Boat Tours for Hippo's and Crocs, plus much more. Although these activities were amazing, they do lead me onto another issue. As it was our first time to Saint Lucia, when Michelle and Dave offered to book activities for us we obviously agreed as they were 'the experts', once again this was a let down. After claiming to have booked our safari they told us to go to one of the tourist booking centres to pay for the booking, we arrived at the centre to be told no booking had been made by the Kingfisher lodge. So we then had to book our own, which was no problem but if you offer, then at least go through with what you have offered. However this wasn't our biggest disappointment, the horse riding was. 5 of us decided we'd go horse riding in Saint Lucia and so again Michelle and Dave offered to which we stupidly allowed them to 'book'. We arrived at the stables, which was like a scene from a horror film, absolute silence and no one around! After around 10 minutes of wondering around the stables a young man approached us looking a bit confused to why were there, we explained we had a booking made for 5 by the Kingfisher lodge, he said all bookings were cancelled today and the only booking they had was at 3:30, ours was meant to be at 2:00. We used the young mans mobile to contact the manager of the horse riding and stables who said that the Kingfisher lodge hadn't booked us on for today, but for tomorrow, when our safari was booked? Again, it's no one fault that the weather cancelled all bookings but we didn't have one on that day, even though Michelle had confirmed to us on that morning that we did. The rooms we could cope with as that was not what we mainly came for, and the activities well we managed to sort them out by ourselves with a lot more success than when we asked Michelle or Dave to. But the biggest disappointment was the hippo's, or lack of them. Michelle's guide book offered such hope that we were certain to see a hippo drinking out of the pool. We followed her guide on the first night and quietly sat outside near the pool waiting for the hippo, after about 30mins, Dave came rushing through telling us he'd seen a hippo at the end of the road and that we must follow him, as it was our first night, excitement took over and we did, a good 1 hour drive later we'd seen stars and trees, the most exciting part was the random, pointless off roading, our excitement soon turned to disappointment. For the next 3 nights we were determined to sit round the pool area so we could see a hippo, but every night once we came back from our evening meal at say 8/8:30' all doors were locked and there was no waking anyone up, so there was no way of actually getting to the back of the house(where the pool is), diminishing our chances of seeing a hippo. For me personally, I believe the host should always stay up till the last guest goes to bed and if the host doesn't want to do that then don't have their house near the pool, put the guests near the pool so they can spend as much time there as they want. One our last night, we arrived in the car park and could hear hippo noises coming from the pool and garden area, we rushed out of the car to try and get in to the garden, again the doors were locked, ringing frantically, Dave popped out of the side house we explained the situation to which he replied ''well I'm in bed so you can't'' This all at 8:00' we were amazed. I have never had such poor customer service. The reason we were neglected was the unusual obsession Michelle had with another family who were staying, we were sure they were family when she invited herself to activities with them and invited the children to stay in her room, but they weren't family. This is a very personal review as me and my family have never fault so awkward and unwelcome at a so called 'guest house'. The location is superb and the grounds are beautiful but for this place to succeed there needs to be a change in ownership and management. If, after reading this toy still decide to stay at the Kingfisher, then my advice world be to take whatever Michelle's books says very lightly, she can't shut down a place by herself and the only disappointment of places was her lodge, not any restaurants! Book your own activities, there are several booking centres along the main road, any of them will be fine. If you want to sit in the garden then make sure you're sat there by 6 and don't move until you've seen a hippo, if you don't this, you'll never get to see one. Oh and don't alter the temperature of the fan... I cannot express how strongly disappointed we were, if we do return to Saint Lucia, the Kingfisher will be bottom of our list.

The lodge has extensive shady gardens with a wide variety of trees. St Lucia Estuary can be viewed from the end of the garden and the start of the walking trail through the Gwalagwala Forest is next to the front gate. This proximity to nature means that the gardens are home to a wide variety of birds and are often visited by animals such as hippos, various antelope, bush babies and very occasionally leopards. A small swimming pool is available for the exclusive use of guests. Guests are welcome to relax either on sun loungers in the garden, under a poolside shaded area or in the comfortable lounge in the main house.
