Owner description: The Sudwala Caves is the oldest known caves in the world and lie in the Drakensberg escarpment.Regular guided tours take you 600 meters in and 150 meters underground. Tours leave every 10 min (approx) and take about 30 minutes. The caves have some amazing formations including stalactites, stalagmites, flow stones and pre cambrian fossils. The most famous formation is the Screaming Monster. This is actually a stalactite that has joined with a stalagmite and has formed a column that is 200 million years old.

Being Swazi I enjoyed the history! I have been about 4 times and I don't get tired of going. Also, it is a great place for Swazi's to take foreign travelers as it is not far.

The Sudwala Caves are really interesting. Sadly they seem to have been left unmaintained for a while and the parking, shop etc need a bit of TLC. However don't let this facade put you off of a great tour hosted by a very knowledgeable guide. Our tour had a young afrikaans lady leading it and she was fun and informative.

Thank you for your review. Feedback is important to us. There are 3 separate business entities at the "Sudwala Caves." These are, The Sudwala Caves, Pierre's Mountain Inn and the Dinosaur Park. Unfortunately people often see all three businesses as a single entity. This is not the case. Our business area comprises the bottom car park and the area directly outside the cave entrance ending 20 meters beyond the fish spa. The Sudwala Caves has a comprehensive year round maintenance and upgrade program which includes both the interior and exterior of the cave. In the last 3 years we have resurfaced the 1.8km access road leading to the caves. Built a sizable new deck, viewing platform and a brand new shop directly below the cave entrance. This shop is well stocked with snacks, drinks, curios and crystals year round. In addition we have invested in a new attraction. The outdoor gara rufa fish spa is the first of its kind in Mpumalanga and is very popular with our guests. This year we upgraded all the toilets and built new shower facilities for our crystal tour customers. Inside the caves we upgraded the electrical system and added a significant number of additional lights. In addition we are in the process of changing all the old bulbs to energy efficient ones. Our car park is well maintained and provides ample parking for our guests. Considering the space constraints (side of a mountain) we can accommodate a surprising number of tour buses and private vehicles. Our management team would be very interested to hear any ideas that could improve our facilities. They can be reached via email info@sudwalacaves.com

We had a great time and the tour is well worth the money. Decent closed shoes are needed if you want to do the whole tour.

Even the kids enjoyed it. The fairy cave at the end is so worth the trouble to get to it.

The caves at Sudwala are definitely something you should visit at least once :). It can get a little wet inside so make sure you wear a jacket and closed shoes.
