“New years eve dinner”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Very poor. We booked for new years eve, arriving at 8pm to a half empty restaurant. Despite this, we were told to wait and left standing in the doorway for about ten minutes before being seated. A party of four, we were given a table with six places. They left two spare place settings for the duration of the meal. We had to shuffle up though as the two people on the end straddled a table leg, very uncomfortable!

We sat for a good ten minutes before we were asked about drinks. The staff were rude, slovenly and poorly dressed with stomachs hanging out of what I imagine passed for uniforms. Drinks finally arrived. One of our party was vegetarian, a fact highlighted when I booked, and again earlier in the day. She asked what choices there were. The waitress said she would ask but we never saw her again.

We then sat with empty glasses for half an hour. Finally, a different waitress ambled over to take our order and refresh drinks. Food was slow to arrive (about half an hour), quality was mediocre, service atrocious, price expensive, ambience non existent.

“Great yummy restaurant”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

I give the food 10/10! It was beautifully presented and tasted awesomely delicious! What I loved is that the portions were nice and small, just right so that you can easily have all three courses. The hosts and waiters were all very neatly dressed and friendly and never made a mistake with an order and was very attentive on their guests. The table settings were beautiful and the whole place gave a comfy feel to it. Loved it, definitely worth a visit!

Service very slow. Had to request pre-meal drinks twice, forgot one guest's drink. The list goes on.

“Good view. Pity about the food.”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

Lovely setting and delightful views. Sparkling wine glasses, well polished cutlery and crisp white tablecloths set a positive scene. The wine list is good and prices reasonable.

My starter was ostrich carpaccio. despite having been well beaten the slices were too thick and had not been marinated. Presentation was good but no lemon or capers. The tiniest drizzle of balsam vinegar on the plate. Oil and vinegar was provided on the table.

I tested the prawns selected by my guests. Overcooked and thence rubbery texture. Pity.

My main course was chateaubriand ordered medium to rare (is there any other way to cook chateaubriand?). Arrived well done. As this dish takes 30 minutes to prepare (15 in oven and 15 resting) it would not have been reasonable to my guests to send my meal back.

A further problem was with the accompanying béarnaise sauce. Several required ingredients were missing and the sauce presented was basically clarified butter.

One of my guests declared the kingclip fish to be excellent.

This used to be one of Nelspruit's finest. There has clearly been a change of chef and management. A dress code is required. Casual is fine but no tee shirts or denim. This is a restaurant which most guests visit for special occasions.

Smoking policy is strange. Allowed on a balcony separated only by a pane of glass from diners. Outside should really a bit further away than 5mm.
