“Lovely stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2011

The owner/manager was friendly and welcoming with good local knowledge. We stayed in the Linos Lodge chalets/rondawels and they were clean and well equipped. They provide mosquito nets and insect repellent spray in the rooms, nice touch I thought. The restaurant is an open "lapa" style right on the river bank where you can look accross into the Kruger national park. The food was absolutely wonderful. Our party tried the Ostrich fillet, the beef fillet, the eisbein and the T-bone steak - all got the thumbs up. We were very impressed with this lodge and can highly recommend it.

Two friends and I stayed here for one night in March 2011. We choose this hotel for it's proximity to the Malelane gate. We were travelling in from another part of SA and weren't going to make the gate closing time for the first night of our visit to KNP. When we arrived at the hotle we were promptly checked in. We wanted to have dinner there and were told we needed to hurry as the restaurant took last orders at 8pm (which was rapidly approaching). I was a little surprised as I had emailed priro to arriving to make let them know that we would be there atround 8pm and wanted to have dinner at their restaurant to no response. We went straight to the restaurant and it didn't really seem a problem that we were 'late'. The dinner served up was absolutely delicious. Wide choice on the menu, friendly service and plenty of wine. Plenty of mosquito spray available from the hotel but there wasn't that many around. The rooms were basic but nice. Excellent value for the price. Breakfast was included and this was great, fairly standard hot an cod options, but great view across the river into the KNP and animals wandering by occasionally. The owner (i think) was very helpful when we asked for some advice about self driving around the KNP that day.

All in all very happy with the place, but my personal opinion is that you want to be inside the park if you are staying there for a while, so I only saw this as a stopping off point in transit. I feel a little sorry saying that as I did enjoy the one night there and thought it was great value..

We stayed in Rio Vista Lodge for 6 nights and wanted to stay longer. The rooms were very comfortable & daily maid service meant always clean & tidy. The resturant decking over looking the Kruger National Park was breath taking & we saw White rhino, croc & elephants early am / pm. The food was amazing & the service & attention to detail by the owner excellent. The pool was nice to relax by though only 2 sun loungers. We felt perfectly safe with being in a gated area & guard on duty through the night. Would recommend a visit & will return again to finish trying all the dishes on the menu!

We arrived in South Africa with a couple of days to fill in before we headed to our pre-booked accommodation inside Kruger. We knew the Malelane area and thought that we could fill in a couple of days there. We went to Rio Vista Lodge on the recommendation of a nearby lodge that was full and we were accommodated in The Shack Guest House. We had a wonderful two nights and days there, the staff were great, the house girl exceptional and we did share the outdoor area with the two dogs that we thought were well behaved and no problem. We arrived home one afternoon to see a herd of elephants right at the back fence - just a wonderful and serene place. Lovely sunsets and evenings from the back verandah and the deck next door at the Lodge. The meals at the lodge were also great and the staff there could not have been more helpful. We would certainly return. The Shack would be a great place to share with a group of friends.

This was our second visit to this accommodation in 4/5 years. As we were a large group this time we were divided between The Shack, the Lodge and Linos Lodge. The Shack was a good place to stay having our own pool and jacuzzi. The house was comfortable and clean with kind honest staff. The house was well airconditioned and most definitely needed. An amazing holiday in that we were located on the edge of the Kruger Park so good views. Whilst lazing at the pool with a barbeque going, we were able to view rhino, hippo and on our last visit, elephants, giraffe and zebra too. The house was well equipped although it could have done with more or better kitchen utensils (sharp knives, peelers and more cutlery).

The bungalows were lovely too and definitely recommended!

The management, Madelaine and Johan were excellent hosts and extremely obliging, nothing was too much trouble. They cooked an amazing meal on the 25th December!! All in all an excellent stay and highly recommended!

The Shack guest house was booked as a 3 day luxury end to a 3 week holiday in Mpumalanga. 6 adults stayed at The Shack guest house part of the Rio Vista complex. The guest house was clean, well equipped and comfortable overlooking the Kruger Park, however when we arrived we found 2 big boxer dogs roaming round the pool area. My husband went to see the Manager who was most put out when we requested he remove the dogs and clean the garden up, he said South Africans would welcome 2 dogs to guard them he even tried to blackmail us by saying they would have to be put down. His manner was very aggressive and intimidating but he did take the dogs away and the next day came and cleared their mess up - this was a day of our stay wasted. The jaquzzi outside never worked which was something we had been looking forward too also the pool needed a good clean before anyone dared swim. Our group decided that we should have some recompense for the jaquzzi and dog trauma we then came across the most disagreeable woman I have ever had the misfortune to meet instead of apologising she blamed us for not wanting to look after the dogs also proceeded to tell us how much had been spent on trying to mend the jacquzzi - a very bad end to a wonderful holiday.
