“Most nice stay, whilst travelling for Business”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2012

I Travelled all over the Lowveld area and when I got to the Lodge, I was suprized with a very large room, wooden deck overlooking a dam, little setting area and it was very nice to take a good break from the Roads. This room is very private and I had a good nights rest after a very nice Buffet.

Room Tip: Room 18 is closed to the stairs leading to the Restaurant and Parking area. The view from this room...

We only stayed one night. We arrived late after a long drive from Johannesburg and a tour of the surrounding area. An interesting a day to say the least and it came to a very good end at the Umbhaba Lodge. Our room was very large, complete with a separate bedroom and setting area complete with a real fireplace. Really very homey, very clean, and neat. I should also mention that our room had a balcony overlooking a small lake. The overall effect was very scenic and charming. If we had had our own transportation it is the kind of place we could have stayed in for several days quite happily. Overall, a very good base for exploring the surrounding area. An outstanding room, friendly staff, a good restaurant, and an equally good bar what more could you ask for? Definitely value for money. I have not rated the Umbhaba Lodge excellent only because we stayed one night.and I did not have time to really fully appreciate it. My only negative comment is that at night the living area in our room was poorly lighted. It would have been difficult, if not impossible, to read a book at night in the living area. Other than that very satisfied. Definitely value for money..

We recently stayed at Umbhaba lodged & I'm surprised by its four star rating. The room was dark, smelled, & required a good clean (particularly the very dirty bathroom). There were marks on the manchester, the bath was constantly dirty & the bottom of the shower slimely & mouldy. The doors& walls were also stained. The doors were difficult to lock and unlock & they barely shut. The grounds were ok, the pool dirty.

The service was mixed- service staff in the restaurant was very friendly but food/ drink delivery was slow & the bland food often served cold. Room service was very slow & issues raised with management went unresolved despite repeated attempts to address a booking issue.

Upon leaving the lodge a 'tourist' fee was applied to our bill- this never occurred anywhere else we stayed in SA. Sadly, when gratuity was added to our bill we were told by wait staff that they would not receive it unless it was given in cash.

Parts of the shared areas were nicely presented & 'homely' but unfortunately this did not make up for this lodge's downfalls.

The Umbhaba Lodge in Hazyview outside of Kruger National Park is lovely, the perfect  South African setting and is convenient to the park.

However it has some issues. The beautiful setting is in need of some TLC. The landscaping was scraggly and water falls we're not working. As for what I believe was the pool,  I couldn't see the bottom so I wasn't sure if it was a pool or a pond.

The food in the Tuskers Restaurant was very tasty but the menu is limited. The breakfast boxes for those on full day safaris are plentiful.

In the long run I would stay here again but bear in mind it does have issues.

Room Tip: The overlooking pond views are lovely.

My family and I stayed here for 1 night on our way through to the Kruger National Park.
The grounds are beautiful; well maintaned and theres lots of bird life.
The rooms are clean, comfy and airconditioned and have an 'african feel'.
We had great service, the staff were always ready to help with lots of smiles :)
The food was good, especially breakfast!
A good place to stop before or after a long safari; so peaceful! Just beware of the geese they have a tendency to chase you. :)

The grounds are wonderful. The staff was very professional and the rooms are more than one might imagine. The suites are very well equipped and comfortable. While the lighitng was less than "standard", we found that this was the case in most locations so we must accept that the need is for us to change or view of the term "standard". When that is accomplished, the lodge was very nice.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Umbhaba Lodge. We had a lovely room which was large and comfortable. The staff were very friendly (only the ones we met). At night we could see wildebeest, impalas and zebras grazing on the property close to the swimming pool. The lodge is a short drive from the Phabeni gate of Kruger National Park and very close to the Hazyview town.

However, the day before we left we realized that my suitcase number lock had been disabled and my wife and I had a combined total of about USD 700 and about rand 700 stolen from our respective passport bags which were inside the locked suitcase. Both bags were inside my suitcase. On reaching Cape Town the next day I also realized my Hugo Boss jeans was also missing.

I informed the duty manager who seemed very concerned at what happened. But he said he could only report to the general manager next morning. Before I left the next day I spoke to the GM who said he was sorry but could not do anything since we did not use the safe in the room. Is he expecting his guests to stuff their entire belongings in to a safe because he cannot provide a secured room? Moreover, he was hardly apologetic. This incident ruined our stay at the lodge.
