From the moment we arrived at Hippo Hollow, we were made to feel very welcome - nothing was too much trouble for their friendly staff. On arrival we were given a tour of the resort by an enthusiastic chap called Aubrey (sp?), ensuring that we found our feet immediately. He escorted us to our chalet, a charming cottage overlooking the Sabie River, with a real "out of Africa" feel to it. There was no TV or radio in the room, which added to this wonderful feeling of being away from the ratrace.

The restaurant and bar served up excellent food and drink - in particular cocktails courtesy of the bubbly bar-tending expert Cyril. The outdoor seating provides the perfect vantage point to view the wallowing hippos over dinner. With regards to food, don't miss the kudu kebab! Breakfast buffet includes everything you need for a day of abseiling, white water rafting, or whatever takes your fancy.

It's worth also taking a short walk up the road to the local shops (very safe) as there are nice little cafes and restaurants to enjoy, plus a great deli and some gift shops.

We were very sad to leave this little haven of tranquility. If you're visiting soon, please give the cats a stroke from us!

We stayed here for four nights in October 06 - arriving after 26 hours of travelling we were not disappointed. Two charming thatched cottages on the river bank - we could see animal footprints just below ! The rooms have an upstairs and a downstairs to them and include a fridge, nice big family sized shower - should you so wish!

Food was very good, lots of choice including for my two vegetarian daughters and yes the hippos did come up onto the lawn whilst we were eating - best time to see them early morning or dusk - also crocodiles around so the armed guards are a must. Not much to do around the estate itself, a couple of ok pools, but most people are here to safari so you dont see a lot of people around.

Good time of year for Kruger as the grass has not grown too long to see anything, we were lucky and saw all the big five bar rhino plus a lot of other things to.

Any negatives ?- Africa time is very much "rubber time" I had a problem with my room safe which took three hours to sort out, on the other hand we had to go to the local Dr and having no transport a member of staff was swiftly arranged to take us, wait and bring us back. Also lots of twitching and moving in the thatch at night and animal droppings on bed in morning!! But hey it is Africa.

Would I go back ? - yes without a doubt.
