spent 5 days for our anniversary , first refused to take Amex card , then accepted, breakfast buffet poor, no amenities other than soap in rooms , shower leaking, ice machine broke and management made no effort to buy ice elsewhere, rate increased by 30% on 1/1/2013 without notifying us, so I must conclude that this hotel, well situated, with great friendly staff, needs better management !

Room Tip: river facing rooms have a graet view

Thank you for your feedback.
Unfortunately Hippo Hollow Country Estate has experienced industrial action as with the rest of our counrty over the festive season. A "go slow" was undertaken by a select few staff members and compromised the ability to deliver our usual hospitality standards.
When making a booking via a web portal, the rates are reflected on confirmation. Should this not have happened, please contact the hotel as we would like to investigate the matter further. Preliminary investigation has lead us to believe the process is happening according to plan.
Regarding the ice, the suppliers were sold out and after a lengthy search by 3 of our managers, we managed to borrow from another hotel but it was limited.
We appreciate your comments and will use them to improve on our service.

The welcome from the security guard was promising but the experience was terrible.

1. The rooms need renovation, the furniture is old and outdated. I think they use the "african wild" theme as an excuse to keep things old and outdated

2. The water from the taps is dirty and not fit for showering let alone human consumption as you will see from the attached pictures

3. The pool was unlike the impressive pictures you see on the website. it was dirty and green as you will see from the pictures

4. The TV is something from the 90s without remotes and they only show 4 channels when South Africa has access to about 100.

5.The service was horrendous, an example : I requested a remote for the TV two separate times and both times it was coming until we checked out.

6. The electric kettle with which we are supposed to make tea or coffee in the room is completely rusted forcing us to clean it numerous times before using it

In response to your comments, we would like to offer the following explanation.
The decor is usually well recieved but as you point out, it is not to everyone's taste.
We had a lot of rain over the December month that caused the brown water from our borehole. The water isn't dirty, but discolored. It is safe to shower with and brush your teeth, but we recomend not drinking it. I must also point out that this is common for the area.
In the event of lightning and a lot of rain, the pool water does tend to go green in colour. This is a common phenomenon.
We did have a shortage of TV remoted unfortunately due to other guests taking them with on departure. We were unable to pruchase more remotes during December as our suppliers was closed for the season. We have now purchased brand new remotes and have placed them in all the rooms that didn't have.
Thank you for bringing the issue of the kettles to our attention. They have been replaced.
We value your feedback and are disappointed that we couldn't aerve and satisfy your needs.

Spent two nights here on a South African tour and enjoyed every minute of it. Rooms very clean and comfortable and the buffet breakfast and dinners very substational and varied. Breakfast overlooking the lawn and river was something to cherish as we were entertained by a nuber of animals while we ate including elephant. Very close to one of the main Kruger Park gates which meant that an early start was very possible- always a good time to see the Big Five.

Room Tip: rooms around the pool are bright and quiet as are those overlooking the river

Initially I was disappointed as I had been allocated a dull dark room on the ground floor, with the back window overlooking the parking area for buses and some dark bushes. It also had a rather damp smelling bathroom. However, I was easily accommodated when I asked to change and can happily recommend the rooms upstairs,... mine had a little balcony overlooking the swimming pool and the garden, which was really comfortable and very clean. It also had been recently refurbished. No shower, only a bath, but this was not a problem for me. They had English wall plugs as well as SA, which were handy if you had not brought enough adaptors.
The dining room was very pleasant with an outside area leading down to the river. One night a Happy Hippo turned up on the opposite bank to provide the floor show!
Food is excellent, and the breakfast buffet very adequate for all tastes. The staff were very friendly and helpful.. overall this was a very good experience.
Downs: Wifi is temperamental, if that is important to you. Only available in the lounge and dining area.
Beware: don't send delicate or fine fabric clothes to the laundry..... they all get washed and ironed at the same temperature!! (like HOT)

Room Tip: Ask for room upstairs, or a chalet by the river. . If you want a shower and not a bath, be sure and request it. Some rooms are sharing an adjoining door.... not very soundproof if you want an early night.

We stayed at Hippo Hollow in 2010 & loved it!
November 1st this year we decided to marry there, by the river. It was beautiful. We stayed for a week & yet again the hotels staff from cleaners to management are wonderful. We stayed in a clean & comfy chalet by the river. The meals were delicious. Would definitely recommend this hotel. Its so close to Kruger national park too!
Well done Hippo Hollow, keep up the good work!
:)
