Having broken our vow of never returning to the same place twice because it would not be as good the second time around, we were delighted to find that our trip to Hippo Hollow in October 2011 was even better than our stay in 2009. To say it is a fanstatic place to stay would be doing it an injustice.

We stayed for 11 nights which is unusual as most people only grab a couple of nights on their journey through Africa. But if you are looking for peace and quiet but with plenty of things to do, perfect weather and the Kruger on your doorstep, you can't get better than Hippo Hollow.

I would say to everyone who complains about ants and bugs that this is real Africa (even though with a generous sprinkle of luxury) and if you can't cope with that, then stay in a clinically sealed hotel in Cape Town. Yes we did get insects in the room but what can you expect when you are on top of a hippo river, with crocs swimming by, monkeys playing on the veranda and elephants in the forest over the river. It is a small price to pay! I always say that it you have a mosquito net and a can of Doom you can stay anywhere in Africa comfortably!

The staff at Hippo Hollow are amazing and made us feel welcomed immediately. Our son is 8 and everyone went out of their way to talk to him and make sure he was looked after. It is a great place for families. In fact it is a great place for anyone! And would we come back again? Absolutely! This place is a gem.

Lovely thatched rooms in semi-detached cottages around a large central bar and dining room. Spacious terrace overlooks the river, where Hippos can be seen grazing (in the hotel grounds!) at night. We also saw monkeys in the trees, a crocodile (on the hotel river bank) and elephants playing in the river. Food (buffet) was good and the Evening Shangaan festival of young people dancing and singing is not to be missed - it was sublime.

We had a lovely stay at Hippo Hollow in October 2011. We stayed for 6 nights using it as a base to explore Kruger aswell as a private game reserve and the panorama trail. We had a river side chalet so spent our evenings watching the Hippos grazing on the grass only a few meters below us. The staff at Hippo Hollow were so helpful and friendly and the breakfast was amazing! We ate in the hotel a couple of evenings and walked up to Perry's Bridge on other evenings for a change.

Room Tip: Try to get a river view chalet

I must admit the wandering hippos at night made my stay! Great African feel although a stone throw away from the town centre. We stayed for 4 nights and used this as our base to enter Kruger National Park ( Kruger and Numbi gates ). With a little effort you could shoot up north and visit Kapama ( cheetahs ) and use the Orpen gate to drive back down south through the Kruger Park. Rooms / chalets are comfortable with fans but no aircon ( take note if you are planning to visit in the summer months Dec to Feb as it gets very hot in this area ) Restaurant is well suited and met all our needs for breakfast ( and lunch packs to take to Kruger ). Plenty of restaurant options in the area. We enjoyed the Pioneers Grill at Hotel Numbi just up the road, The Pioneers Grill have excellent meat and venison items on the menu. With the great staff who are keen to share their knowledge of the area I find this a real gem in the lowveld !

Room Tip: Make sure you stay in one of the River facing Chalets !
