“Fantastic”
Reviewed November 5, 2012 via mobile

Location ..... On the doorstep to Kruger park!! Reception and dining area very beautiful as we're the hides overlooking Kruger. Rooms are a little dated, but very clean and perfectly functional! Great place and very cheap too. Loved sitting on the verandah having breakfast! A monkey snuck into our room and stole the milk sachets from the tea/coffee making facilities! This was the highlight of the holiday for the kids, not the riding elephants, cage diving with great whites or stroking a cheetah!?? Fond memories! Great friendly staff too

Dear Jo F

We are in the process of updating the older units and this will be completed soon. The monkeys are quite mischievious and seem to think that any open door is an invitation for them to help themselves. We are very pleased that we could be part of the great experience you had in South Africa, and will hopefully see you back with us in the not too distant future.

Whilst entertaining a guest from London, we decided to spend a few days at the Kruger Park Lodge in Hazeyview. The accommodation is fantastic - clean, spacious and everything you need (especially for self catering). The houses/chalets are located in beautiful surroundings, which includes a golf course. The lodge is perfectly situated for visiting the major tourist attractions, especially the Kruger Park.
Management and staff extremely friendly and professional and always available to assist. Our guest was truely impressed with this lodge and has expressed her wish to return next year. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Kruger Park Lodge.

Room Tip: We have stayed at the Lodge on numerous occassions (both business & holiday) and would recommend...

This is a beautiful place to stay in the a great location to explore Kruger National Park. The two bedroom Chalet I was in was beautiful. The only complaint would be that there were no tissue and that is a small issue. The staff was as kind and helpful as it could be..The Hippo Hide was amazing. It had a viewing area that was set up with info on the wall that told you the names of all the birds and other wildlife that you see. We saw about 6 hippos, it was as though they were posing for us.
It was only 15 minutes from the closest Kruger gate. We had a very nice dinner there and the pool was very nice. The grounds are a very nice golf course.

Check in is at 4.00pm so contacted the resort manager a few weeks before our arrival explaining be would be at the Lodge at around 10.00am due to our flight arriving in Joburg at 4.30am from the UK. I asked if it was possible to check in earlier rather than sit around for 6 hours. The reply was not optomistic so hoped for the best. When we arrived we explained why we were early and said we had emailed the Manager. We were eventually checked in at 3.30pm after a little fuss as we were extremely tired and been travelling for over 26 hours. When we got to the unit the cleaner was still there and quickly took her things away as we entered. I had to ask her to stay and finish as only the beds had been made! The rest of the clean up was rushed and not to a good standard at all. Now I know it was our problem that we were early and check in is at 4pm but if I was in their shoes I would have made sure it was one of the units to be cleaned first, especially as they had prior warning. A little common sense and courtesy from management was obviously not on their agenda. The surrounding area (Hazyview) is pretty rundown, in our opinion, especially the Mall. The Lodge did have a restaurant but it was very mediocre and from previous reviews we were relying on eating out. There were a couple of good restaurants to choose from at Perrybridge but as tourists we thought the selection was very poor and a huge letdown. We were told by a timeshare manager that they are no longer interested in foreign tourists but concentrating on catering for South Africans who apparently have different needs and standards. We had 4 excellent days in Kruger but again were very disappointed in the rest camps we stopped at, especially Lower Sabie - most were pretty run down, ie unclean restrooms, broken handles/locks and unhygienic where serving food was concerned. We felt we were in a 3rd world country because their standards were very low. The Panaramic Route is a must, but don't bother visiting Pilgrims Rest (very odd place).
The unit we were in was in dire need of a refurb, the restaurant needs to be managed properly and serving hot food instead of cold is a good start. I believe it may become a Mug and Bean - very keeping with an African theme/feel - not. Although there were a lot of negatives we had a pleasant week because it's what we made of it. It's just a shame that the little things that matter that are so easy to rectify are let down by lack of management training and non existent people skills. Such simple requests were ignored and brushed to one side - ie it took three days of constant pressure to get washing up liquid! The Lodge management seriously need to listen to their guests and get a grip and sort themselves out! However, I would like to add that the rest of the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Would we return to Kruger. YES but with lower expectations
Would we return to Kruger Park Lodge - probably not

Happy to answer any questions :-)

I do apologise sincerely for the issues you experienced during your stay at the resort. I have met with all the departments concerned and we will ensure that our very high standards are applied in every situation. We are currently busy with a refurbishment of the units and this has almost been completed. Once again my apologies that your experience was of one of our older units.

I do hope that you would consider returning to the resort and experiencing what we can offer.

During our South African tour, we spent one week at Kruger Park lodge at Hazyview.
The lodge is absolutely beautiful with a golf course and hippo pond. The villas are very comfortable and spread out on the huge domain, so you do not have big cloister of villas. Many of them are not in timesharing system.
We could enjoy many impalas coming next to the villa as well as these beautiful coral trees.
The lodge is very close to the Kruger Park (less than 20 minutes drive) and not far away from the Blyde river.
However one bad point, the cooking really deserves to be improved! Except breakfast and some steaks, everything else was really not good. Management, either change the cook or, at least, pay him/her cooking lessons. A so beautiful lodge and so poor food! As you do not want to go out of the lodge for seeking better food in the non attractive Hazyview town, cooking must be improved!

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Kruger Park Lodge. It was an excellent base for our travels into Kruger Park. The accommodations were very clean, and lovely. It is a gated area so I felt very safe walking the grounds.
We especially liked the small patio barbeque area. It was fun to watch the golfers putting on the green right next to us in the morning and the impalas grazing at night.
Some reviews have said the service in the dining room was slow, but I think that is by American standards. We found that to be true everywhere we went in south Africa and soon learned to relax and enjoy the leisurely pace. if you are really hungry, order an appetizer.
We also really enjoyed the two safaris the resort booked for us. One in the morning and most of the day in Kruger, the other at night in a private reserve. We also drove ourselves in the park and were pleased with the clear signs, well maintained roads, and the rest stops with full facilities.
The one negative was the internet service. Their set-up is very slow. We did much better at an internet service in Perry's Bridge shopping area near by. There are excellent restaurants and shopping there also.

Room Tip: Remember they have thatched roofs, your allergies might be affected.

Contarary to other reviews of chalets being dated, the one we had was brilliant. It was fitted with under floor heating , all the mod cons and even an ice machine. It also came with a resident cat that believed it owned the place. There was even cat food supplied in the cupboard to feed it.

We had a lovely view, overlooking the fountain. The chalet was serviced daily which was a bonus.

All in all - we had no complaints.

We thought we might take a night game drive, but when we enquired at reception we felt that the cost was excesssive. So we went to the park gates and made a booking there, basically for the same thing, at a fraction of the cost.

Room Tip: We had Unit 514 with a great view
