Pleased it was only one night of the tour. Location is good, lake tennis courts, pool and golf but main hotel old , room small with tired bathroom and noisy aircon.Buffet dinner and breakfast average too.

We stayed at the Sabi River Sub Resort in a standard room in the hotel from 31/1/2014 to 2/2/2014. The restaurant was the biggest disappointment with slow service, cold food and empty buffet dishes. The braai buffet on the Friday night was also cold and over-priced. I found it strange that there was no chef or other staff in attendance at the buffet to make sure the dishes were refilled to prevent food running out and delays in re-filling dishes. It was as though there was no supervision at the hotel and staff were doing their own thing. On the Saturday night we went to an outside restaurant and had a super meal with excellent service and much better value. It was extremely hot that weekend but the air conditioning unit rattled a lot so you couldn't use it properly. You can't drink the water but no bottled water is supplied at all. In other hotels we have stayed at, 2 small bottles are left in the room for brushing teeth etc. When I asked an employee if I could get a jug of water, she told me I could buy botted water at the shop. What's the point of tea/coffee stations in the room if the water is brown? When I read the lovely reports from other people, I can't believe we were in the same resort. The grounds are gorgeous and beautifully maintained and I would definitely go for a chalet next time as they look lovely.

Room Tip: We left a message with one of the therapists at the spa and are still waiting for a call . . .

I spend a long weekend at the Sabi River Sun Resort on the weekend of the 14th of Feb 2014. At the onset I must say that the resort is in a good state in terms of gardens, golf course, facilities, etc. Having stayed at many Southern Sun resorts and other hotels, I must state that the hotel room bathrooms are in a terrible state. It seems as they have attempted a quick and nasty refurb.
The tiles were painted and now there is pain on the taps, shower, toilet, etc. The frame around the mirror had a piece removed, not sure why? There are holes in the tiles, etc - very very tired and uninviting bathroom.
The aircons are ancient and make a load noise although they are effective. having stayed in the last room on our floor we had to contend with a beeping noise which I can only imagine is from an alarm system or some sort of communication system, ok when the tv is on, not so great when all is silent.
The room is ok, new tv, but glass as opposed to plastic tumblers is always a good start, also there was no bar fridge in the room, the new electric plugs in the furniture did not work, no room service menu in the room and the tea and coffee facilities are a little tired (by comparison, a 4 star in Antwerp (Lindner Hotel) has tea, hot chocolate and a Nespresso machine).
The service was not the greatest, when it rained there were no umbrellas provided to get guests to the car park dry or even a golf cart to provide this service, when I enquired the staff mentioned that guest steal their umbrellas and that is why they do not have any.
On the Sunday afternoon, there was not a waiter in sight at the pool, ended up going to the bar myself to get what I wanted (as did other guests).
The buffet breakfast was not good at all, I am talking about overcooked sausages, very oily bacon, limited variety of fruit (only fruit salad), for the life of me I could not get any sauces with breakfast and the service itself not good at all, had to set my own table even after having had asked the waiter - a very disappointing experience.
Had room service the one night, ordered a pizza, the back of the doe was back from the charcoal - over has probably not been cleaned for a while.
In terms of the attractions like the hippos, I found that the staff were not all knowledgeable of the habits, best time to view, where to view, etc. which would be a very good service differentiator.
knowing the group well, local and abroad - I expect mush better. Hopefully the GM can revitalise some of these areas.
The positioning and greens made it very pleasant but I know that this resort can offer better, especially given the number of foreign visitors as well as local tourists that it receives.

I had a pleasant enough 3 night stay here recently as part of a Kruger visit.

More resort than hotel, a range of activities are available on site, including golf, tennis and bowls. The grounds, including the golf course and a hippo pool, are very well maintained and make for a very pleasant stroll or an energetic walk.

Distinction needs to made between the chalets and the hotel rooms. The chalets, referred to in several previous reviews, abut directly onto the golf course and appear to be large and well appointed. The hotel rooms (where I stayed) are in a separate building and appear far more modest. Our double room (room 205) was comfortable but far from luxurious. It had A/C and a safe but no fridge.

The buffet breakfast is very good with all the hot and cold choices you would expect to find, including eggs made to order (any style). We were very impressed with the quality and range of choices offered by the dinner buffet (the curry night being a particular stand out). A separate (and more limited) a la carte dinner menu is available but if you have an appetite the fixed price buffet is definitely better value. Unfortunately the service at dinner tended to be somewhat haphazard which let things down a little.

The resort is about a 20 minute drive from the nearest Kruger gate. Private transport will be required or joining an organised tour.
