We camped at Gecko Backpackers in April last year and simply loved the experience! The campsite was spacious and quiet and there were lots of sites to choose from that were private and shady. The bathrooms were clean and we could use the braai area which had a lovely view of the sunset. We could also use the kitchen so no need to use gas to fry our bacon and eggs for breakfast, or haul buckets of water to the campsite to wash up. The owner was really cool and kept the bar open late ;) The little splash pool was pretty but so cold! There are 2 cute, friendly dogs and a talkative African Gray Parrot who we loved playing with. The place has so much charming character - nicely decorated with a natural eclectic feel - and is VERY affordable. It is close to Kruger Park so we could go in for day visits (much cheaper than staying in the park). It is also close enough to visit places like God's Window and go bungee jumping or hiking or ziplining etc (we didn't do that this time) and there are some cool things in and around Hazyview like the reptile park (worth a look) and a monkey park and elephant adventures.
If your idea of a holiday is luxury, then camping in general is not for you - but if you, like me, actually enjoy camping and are looking for a cheap getaway, this a wonderful place to stay!
