I just got back from two weeks in Hazyview and Cape Town and this was by far my favorite part of the trip. Learning about the elephants and getting to be that close to them was an experience I will never forget. The staff was exceptional, making sure to include everyone that showed an interest in the elephants, letting us touch them, give commands, and feed them. They went above and beyond in making sure everyone had photos taken with the elephants as well. Riding Tembo was amazing! It really was a once in a lifetime experience.

Up, close and personal with Elephants. And photographed with Tambo, 3.4 metres high and weighing 6.2 tonnes, unforgettable.

We arrived in Hazyview in the mid-afternoon from Johnnesburg and after a brief rest went on to visit Elephant Whispers. It did not disappoint... We were greeted and had to sign the prerequisite waiver regarding our safety around the elephants. The whole visit lasted about 2 or 2 1/2 hours. The first was an introduction to the elephants - who were truly awe-inspiring - large and imposing. They came close and showed us how intelligent they were... how they could understand what they were told and how each one had its very own personality.. some playful, open and friendly. The handlers were firm and kind, all the time ensuring our safety. Then one elephant was brought very close, we fed him and then he was asked to lie down in front of us. We touched his skin, the back of his enormous ear, and the hair on his tail. While this demonstration was going on we were educated about his anatomy, his habits, his routines, how and why he came to the sanctuary and the terrible challenges elephants face because of habitat destruction. It was an excellent, intimate introduction to the planet's largest land animal.
