“Luxury Tent Experience at Marakele was really fun, but no "Big 5" in the park.”

Owner description: Valleys give way to grasslands and finally to mountains in this rolling, soaring wildlife sanctuary. Rare rhinos, African elephants, wild dogs and the prehistoric Cycad plants are among its amazing sights.

We went there Feb. 24/25, 2012 and really enjoyed the Luxury Tent Camp. It is a "must try" because of the beautiful
scenery of the Waterburg Mtns and fun being on the only watering hole, watching animals come in to drink. The little
monkeys "swinging through" the camp, make it perfect for picture taking!

We enjoyed our days driving and looking, but the park is not well stocked with any Big 5 animals. Luckily we were at Pilansburg the week before and saw an abundance of animals including 4 of the Big 5, but that also was a guided tour, whereas in Marakele, we were on our own which was also very fun!

Both parks offered their own experience, but the Luxury Tent Accomodation is the draw at Marakele, for sure!

All official literature on Marakele states implicitly that the park is a big 5 park and that the park has wild dogs, this turned out to be a lie.

I was told on arrival that the park that the wild dog had shipped off for Botswana, the parks two male lion keep escaping, the buffalo have been removed and you would be extremely lucky to see the elephant (which we were).

The camping facilities were good except that there is no swimming pool, nor are the ablution facilities kept clean.

For the price I would not recommend this park to anybody!

Visited the Tlopi Tented Camp which was fabulously wild. Both nights we were woken up my monkeys on the fixed structure roof and baboons trying to steal food. Being this close to nature may be as exciting for you as it is for me, and if so you will enjoy this place. The accommodation is good but it is not luxury. The beds were comfortable, the shower hot, and the kitchen reasonably well-equipped. We saw a large number of animals (Monkeys, Baboons, Kudu, Impala, Tortoise, Monitor Lizard, Wildebeast, Zebra, etc) but none of the Big 5. The park claims to have 200+ elephants but in 2 days of driving around we failed to see any. The vastness of this park is difficult to explain, and whilst we were unlucky so were most of the people in tents around us. This is not 'shooting fish in a barrel' wildlife viewing ; every sighting should be cherished as you are in a truly wild locatity. I would recommend this place, but come with realisitic expectations of seeing zebras, baboons and plenty of different deer varieties ; if you then see any Big 5, particularly predators, you will feel very enriched. If this is your once in a lifetime trip to Africa to see BIg 5 I would suggest going somewhere with a higher animal to hectare proportion.

We made a day trip To Marekele, the scenery beautiful up the mountain outstanding, the toilets disgusting, the one did not have a window or a door, top of the mountain is disgusting, filthy, people are now using the veld with paper all over the place. The amount of staff sitting in reception on the chairs & arms of chairs laughing & talking I think they need to do some work & clean toilets and empty refuse bins full Very disapointing.
Why ruin a beautiful park you have the staff, will not be returning

THis is a fabulous little national park - a bit rundown, very basic, very few facilities and definitely far from luxurious. the place teems with insects, and I mean teems - lots of them, all shapes and colours, everywhere. But it's fabulously wild, and if you want to rough it slightly and see some real wilderness, this is the place for you. If you want a little luxury, good wine and fine dining, this isn't. I actually loved it, but it's not for everyone.
