“AMAZING!!!”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

The best holiday ever!
Thank you so much for an amazing holiday.
Horses, people, food and accommodation - not one fault I can think of.
Everyone was lovely and made us feel so welcome.
I would definitely recommend this holiday to anybody who loves horses in their natural environment and if you want an insight to Africa. Experienced things I will never ever forget.
Definitely coming back.
Again thank you!!!

As a teenager, just about to go into my A-levels this was a wonderful taste of freedom and something different from everyday life before sixth form. Everyone was very helpful and all the rides were catered to meet our riding abilities and took into account want we wanted to do. All we had to do was ask if we could do something and if it was possible Horizon would arrange it for us. I think the one of the best things was the way they catered for and took into consideration all the little things that you would not normally expect to be considered at a hotel and the pleasant little surprises which this created.

My daughter and I went to Horizon for a 'once in a lifetime' riding holiday. Only trouble is, we now have to go back as the experience was so good! The memories we have built are lasting and special. We were so well looked after in terms of making our stay comfortable and every effort was made to match us with the right/favourite horse. The goal of the staff at Horizon is to ensure you are looked after and that you get to do the riding activities you request. The family atmosphere with guests and staff getting along together means we left having made a second home. Not forgetting the best bit - the wonderful variety of characters that you get to know and ride!

You might assume that this is just another horse riding place but in order to get a good idea of Horizon you should be thinking of …your favourite lodge in Africa AND all of your best friends will be there AND your mother will be doing all the cooking AND it’s got the best horses AND there’s wild animals AND… you get the idea : this is the stuff of dream holidays.
A fantastic place with fantastic people and fantastic horses. We spent 9 days there in August 2013 – my wife, our 8 year old daughter, our 3 year old son and me. My wife and daughter previously rode but my son & I were complete novices, however, we all rode twice a day, every day. Nothing was too much trouble – taking our 3 year old out on his own horse every ride, early diners for the kids, trips to town, helping when our car broke down etc… We also spent a night out at “camp Davidson” which is a must.

The highlights were :-
The people : couldn’t have done more for us
The horses : well-groomed and responsive
The rooms : large and very comfortable
The food : I definitely have put on weight
Camp Davison : glamping with great views
Cattle herding : the kids loved it & Shane is a mine of local information

We’re already talking about next year’s trip to see our new friends at Horizon.

Room Tip: Have the adjoining family rooms if you have a large family but the lakeside rooms have great views...

We enjoyed Horizon, but I think it would have been better if we had wanted an activity holiday with a horseback theme, rather than a safari experience riding with wild game. It clearly offers great customer service levels and the riding is spot on for intermediates and beginners with good horses. The lodge looked nice, but we were glad to be in Glamp Davidson which had lovely views and felt closer to nature. The food was satisfactory. The sundowners were fantastic. Regarding the horse riging with game, well it felt a bit like a managed safari park at times, but I guess you get that with these small S African private game reserves. You keep coming up against the fences and riding round in circles and, to be honest, we saw many, many more pedigree cattle grazing the land than game. The up side is that you get quite close to the game, though the pictures on the website are rather misleading as some of the game is not on their reserve and can only be seen from a jeep on a (lovely) bigger reserve an hour away by car. So, a good place for families -and there were several there - and for those wanting to try their hand at the different things Horizon offer. The guides and hosts will put together a 'package' of things that they think will interest you and make sure you have as good a time as possible.

Booking a trip to Horizon was probably one of the best decisions i've made in life so far. Its something that i've always wanted to do, but I've always thought that I couldn't afford it, then I came across Horizon. I spent 10 days at Horizon in June 2013 and it's the best money i've ever spent!

The accommodation is perfect, the food so very delicious and the horses are just gorgeous with something for everyone no matter what your level of riding. But most importantly and what makes Horizon so special is the the atmosphere which is created by the most wonderful staff, guides and volunteers. I was made to feel so welcomed and part of the team as soon as I stepped from my transfer. This went a very long was especially as I was a female travelling alone and also my first time in South Africa.

I was very lucky as I got to ride about 10 different horses over the 10 days, and each and everyone one of them was a brilliant ride. Some more spirited than others (at my request) but I felt 100% safe on all of them. None of the horses have any issues and you can enjoy each and every ride to the full. I ended up having 2 favourites - Hot Tamale and Ragtime and the staff did their best to allow me to ride them both as much as possible. The horses are so well cared for and as they are living in a herd, they are really happy and sane. They are also very giving, forgiving and willing to please the rider. They totally unflappably and non spooky as well. A joy!

I was very lucky to have great wildlife sightings as well. Giraffe, Hippo, Zebra, Wildebeest, Kudu, Warthog to name a few. It's been a dream of mine to see Giraffe whilst on horseback for as long as I can remember and I wasn't disappointed. Not only are there bush-rides but you get the opportunity to ride through farms and villages and then of course there are the long sandy tracks with endless canters and gallops. I was in the saddle for 6 hours a day for 10 days straight but the saddles are so comfortable that you really didn't notice!

I really can't rate this place highly enough and i'm already saving for my next trip in 2014. You will not be disappointed - trust me!

This was the best decision of my life! From the beginning I was made to feel welcome and part of the Horizon family, I can't thank all the staff enough for that. Its such a warm and friendly environment which enables you to completely relax and enjoy. Every horse is so well looked after and a joy to ride (especially Habonero and Barefoot!!) With nearly 80 horses to choose from there is a horse for everyone's ability. So even if your not that confident on a horse or an experienced rider you will have the best holiday ever! The food cant be faulted and afternoon tea is a definite weakness of mine! The chefs do an incredible job. I cannot recommend Horizon any higher, I absolutely loved my time there (with only a couple 'Serena-moments'!) thank you all so much again! I have so many special memories of amazing times from sundowners to swimming with the horses! I will be definitely be trying to come back as soon as I can!!

Room Tip: They are all lovely rooms!
