“Aussie invasion at the Ranch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2012

Last weekend (29th September to 2 October 2012) 12 of us Australians (6 adults and 6 kids ranging from 6 months old to 8 years old) who are all currently living in Botswana decided to go to the Ranch for Botswana Weekend. We had all booked Golf Chalets and upon arrival found out we were not all next to each other as requested (two families were, but ours wasn't). However the receptionist was kind enough to give us the chalet next to them which was available. The Chalets were beautiful, spacious and very comfortable, with 3 large flat screen TVs (one in each bedroom and one in the lounge room) as well as a DVD player in the lounge room. The only negative thing about it was that we did not have our welcome note and complimentary wine which the other two families got. The resort itself is lovely, very child friendly and the staff well spoken and helpful. The game drive we did on day one was amazing, the encounter with the small lion cubs were a lot of fun too. The 3 Aussie girls then had dinner at Basil's which was delicious, we sent our men and the kids to the Buttery for their dinner. Next morning three of us did the Walk with the Lions which as far as I'm concerned is a must for anyone staying at the ranch, the interaction with them, and walking with them was amazing, I will never forget it and we got a complimentary Ranch T-Shirt too. We then did the short drive Polokwane for a few hours of shopping (we are from Francistown after all) and we were back at the Ranch at 2pm just in time to throw the kids in the pool for some fun. For dinner we all got together, bought some meat and had a BBQ at one of the Chalets (all Chalets have their own BBQ on the verandah). Next day our family decided to have a relaxed morning after a delicious breakfast at the Club House. In the afternoon a few of us had selected to do the Horse Ridding Safari but unfortunately for us, the horses were sick and on medication which was a bit disappointing but no one's fault. I wanted to visit the spa but was told it was outsourced and in town which was disappointing, so I spent a few hours by the pool with the kiddies before we all met up at the Buttery for our final meal. We checked out very easily the next morning after a lovely relaxed weekend. The Ranch is very family friendly, there's lots to keep the kids entertained with the pool, sheep and game drives and overall a great place to have a short break where everyone can find something fun and interesting to do. Only negative things were the internet connection, although it was free it was very bad, I only managed to access it once for about 10 minutes during the 4 days which was frustrating and the fact that the Spa is not on site. Regardless it's a place we will visit again with our family and friends.

Room Tip: Rooms are spacious but if you have kids below 10 years of age, I highly recommend you spend a little...

After almost 4 weeks of camping in South-Africa & Botswana we loved staying at The Ranch for our last night in Africa. Finally we were able to wash off all the dust and dirt in the nice bath and sleep in an excellent bed. Also the staff was very friendly, breakfast was very good and the spare-ribs I had at lunch were the best I have ever had, very tasty! They also have big pool, tennis courts, a golf course and you can do game drives but we just wanted to relax and prepare for our flight back to The Netherlands so we haven't done these things. The only little negative thing was that the shower wasn't spotless, it could have been a bit cleaner.

For us it was an ideal stopover between the Tuli Block in Botswana and the airport in Jo'burg. We would definitively stay at The Ranch again if we were in the area!

A stay at The Ranch Resort/Protea Hotel The Ranch is good for your soul in so many ways! Walking with lions, eating fabulous food, being looked after by genuinely "happy to serve you" staff with smiling faces, relaxing in a beautifully decorated environment, wandering in the fabulous Rose garden (clearly nurtured with great love), chatting with people in the "pub" and last but not least, meeting the family who ensure the venue is run with expertise and as much passion as they have for legacy of this lovely venue. What more could one ask for? I'll definately go back for a longer stay and next time I'll find time for a round of golf and a spa treatment or two!

Room Tip: All the rooms have great decor and seem very comfortable, so I don't think you can go wrong.

A pleasant three hour drive from Fourways to the Ranch Resort for a weekend away from home turned out to be pretty amazing. Plenty to see and do, game drives, lion walks, golf for those that are up to it, and so much more. Add to that a warm welcome from owners and staff, and one of the best steaks I have had in a long time made the experience most enjoyable. Highly recommended. Be sure to specify though what type of room you require upfront although most seemed to be comfortable.

Room Tip: Specify room type (patio etc) bed size.

We stopped for an over-nighter en route back to Botswana and had a fantastic experience, did not get past the bar and the great fine dining restaurant and will have to return to enjoy what the rest of the resort has to offer
