On arrival we were allocated a room with a bath only and no shower(even hand). It took about an hour to re-allocate us to another room. The new room had the following defects. The door lock did not work properly and required a special twist to open. The toilet mechanism was defective and had to be hand operated. The desk reading lamp needed a new bulb. The shower outlet was blocked. Some of these defects were attended to the next day. The bathroom condiments were partly used. On the first night we were awoken by noisy staff at 1 am. The hotel advertised a Sunday carvery which did not materialize. The a la carte menu was limited, expensive and uninspiring. There was no wine per glass available at the bar. The wine list is priced for a five star establishment while this place will struggle to reach 3. The rooms had no means of communication even though things like room service is (apparently) available. There is no fridge in the room and special (inconvenient) arrangements had to be made for storing things like insulin. The "double bed" consisted of two singles pushed together and which did not match in height. The check out took about 30 minutes due to the front desk being manned by new inexperienced staff.

Thank you Francis for your review of Shangri-La. We are terribly sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at our hotel. We take note of your complaints and will attend to these accordingly. Please note that not all of our rooms offer a bar fridge and that our rooms are also advertised as having either a bath or shower or both. It's good to know that you were offered an alternate room. We do offer handheld shower heads that fit to the baths at reception. We have received rave reviews for our food and we are disappointed that you did not find our menu to your taste.

this is an event not to be missed ever again.Thanks to all the effort you as the managers and staff go through every time you have such an evening ....and of course we as the visitors enjoy it most of all ....those of you who have not attended this before dont know what you are missing .....until the 17 May ....see you again ....

Dear Ken, many thanks for the warm welcome and exquisite event, it was extremely enjoyable. I just have to share the absolute tranquility and peace (of the venue) I experienced while staying over after the wine tasting - the gardens and hidden little pathways are a feast and I would love to come back just to 'get lost' in there...

the place is amazing. food is top notch and staff is friendly, the place is so beautiful it reminds me of my grand fathers farm, feels like paredise and don't get me started on the rooms. its like living in a palace.

Dear Ken, Joey and team,

Thank you for the opportunity to have presented a Vrede en Lust wine and food pairing at Shangri-La last week. It was a roaring success and from start to finish you made everyone feel at home.

Something else we would like to share:
In our room we found a pretty flower and leaf arrangement reading 'Melcome'. Realising that it should read 'Welcome', we tweeted a picture of this funny mispelling, only to find out that this was the very creative work of an employee, that a year before, was not able to read or write at all and that Shangri-La has taken her under their wings to teach these basics to this 40 year old lady.

This is a great story of empowerment that warms the heart and inspires us to do the same.
"Doet zo voort" as the Dutch would say :-)

Thank you for your review of Shangri-La on Trip Advisor. It was a thrill to host you and have you join us in presenting the Vrede En Lust Wine Tasting dinner this past month. The feedback has been overwhelming as Trip Advisor is proving.
Yes, you are right, the training of our employees is a cause close to our hearts. Since introducing ABET training, the improvement in the lives of many of our older employees have been significant and they feel empowered. The photograph you have posted on Twitter, which we have retweeted teasing you might be in the room allocated to "Melcome", has created quite a stir. The housekeeper that wrote with the flower petals on your bed is one of the employees that a year ago could not read or write. She, alongside all of her fellow employees, are passionate about our guests. We are very proud of her despite the small error, which by no means makes your welcome note less welcoming.
We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

First of all, thank you for the great evening. The abiance was amazing, especially the bokanaters from the goat cheese farm. The fact of prize winning was fab. The food once more was delish, the wine was of great taste and I thank everyone who made that possible.
