“delightful and cosy weekend break close to johannesburg”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2011

Kobus was at the front door to meet us after we had 'buzzed' the intercom system at the gate. So commenced the start of the attention that we were to receive throughout the weekend. A welcome drink, followed by help with our suitcases.
Our room was delightful and opened up onto manicured grounds. Boxed bars of full sized Dove soap in the bathrooms together with other usual sized toiletries. The only disappointment here was the single ply loo paper.
Kobus liked to serrve dinner at 7pm so that all guests ate together and latecomers delay the start. The food was wonderful and dinner is always a 4 course meal with sorbet served at inbetween.
Breakfast, on the other hand, is served at your leisure and in your own time and this made a change for us as we no longer needed to rush into the dinigroom to eat before it closed.
The lodge provides an evening, open side car ride around the borders of the lodge to view the animals and although we did not take advantage of this, we were able to walk around the property and saw zebra, deer, ostriches and even a hare at close quaters.
Kobus provided the walking sticks and sunhats for the journey.
although we visited in November, I am writing my review in January and can only add that I have fond memories of our stay and recommend it to those looking to get away from it all and to be well looked after.

An hour's drive away from Welgevonden Reserve, where we had been staying, and two hours from Johannesburg, our next stop, my husband and I hit a massive pot hole, flattening not one but two tires on our rental car. With only one spare tire, we were stuck. And, with none of our three--count 'em--cell phones working due to the remoteness of the area, we were stranded.
A driver behind us hit the same pothole and let us use the two remaining pre-paid minutes on his phone. So we called our lodge in Welgevonden and gave the manager there as much information as we could determine about our whereabouts before the call cut off. (There was only a narrow stretch of highway with tall grass on both sides as far as the eye could see.) We didn't know if anyone was coming for us. We didn't know if we should start walking to the next town--and, if we did, we didn't know if it was one or thirty miles away. We didn't know if we should stay where we were. We started assessing how much food, water and sunscreen we had to survive the 90-degree temperatures until help would (or wouldn't) arrive.
A mere 45 minutes later, a car pulled in front of us and Elene, manager of Leeuwenhof Country Lodge & Spa--which was a few miles away unbeknownst to us-- cheerfully greeted us. She told us our lodge had called her asking to help with a transfer and she took over from there, easing all of our worries. She brought us bottles of ice-cold water: "I figured you'd be thirsty!" She invited us to her lodge and offered us a meal: "On the house, after the ordeal you've been through!" And, when we were told to wait by the car in the blistering heat, she insisted on sitting with us for that full hour, with no air conditioning.
The tow truck and our replacement rental car finally arrived, and we all retreated to Leeuwenhof Country Lodge & Spa to discuss the details, where Elene's hospitality was unparalleled. She even arranged a flight to Cape Town to take the place of the train we'd missed and coordinated an extra hotel room for our arrival, which would now be a day earlier than anticipated. When we felt comfortable--we'd been so shaken up out of fear--she sent us on our way with a hug and, when we offered her money for her time, services, phone calls... she refused. "Just send your friends to South Africa and enjoy your time here in our wonderful country!"
So here we are: Elene, we hope more Americans and other international travelers are so blessed to experience your warmth, welcome and utter selflessness at Leeuwenhof Country Lodge & Spa. While we waited in your car for the tow truck and rental car company to arrive, you shared with us the stories of the travel miracles you'd experienced during your life. And now, for the rest of our lives, we'll share the travel miracle from our adventure in South Africa, the day a perfect stranger rescued us and spent her day with us doing everything she could think of to help us and make us feel comfortable. You were our travel miracle.

We stayed at the Leeuwenhof Country Lodge for one night at the start of our holiday. We wanted a place within driving distance after a night-flight, en-route from Jo'burg towards Tzaneen and the north.

With hindsight, I wish we'd stayed at the Leeuwenhof for 2 nights and spent less time in Tzaneen.

The house was beautiful, the room spacious, clean and comfortable, and the gardens and surroundings were lovely. The evening meal was very nice, as was breakfast.

On arrival we were greeted and shown to our room (one of 6 I believe), and offered a drink. After we'd settled in we went for a drive around the grounds to see some of the animals they'd introduced (Zebra, Ostriches. Blesbock, Impala, Eland). They don't set out to be a game reserve and as we were not expecting any animals this was an added bonus.

I'm sure if we'd stayed for more than one night, it would have been a nice relaxing stay, and perhaps my wife would have used the spa facilities. As it was, we left very satisfied in the morning to continue to Tzaneen.

The location was just right - reachable from Jo'burg airport after a gruelling night-flight, and getting us well on our way towards Tzaneen and our destination at Pafuri Camp.

We had an overnight stop here when driving from Johannesburg up to Botswana and we loved it! There are 3.2 kms of dirt track from the main road leading to a lovely colonial style farmhouse. We were welcomed by Helena and Kobus and offered a drink outside looking over the garden, the pool and some ostriches watching us over a wall. Helena offered to take us for a drive round their animal reserve before dinner so after a swim and a freshen up we went with her in the landrover for a tour of the lands. This was a lovely surprise and was well worth doing. We saw plenty of animals including the ostriches close up and Helena was very informative and interesting.

We had a super big bedroom with 25 red roses in it!! (we discovered later that they had been left over from a wedding but how nice to put them there for us!), tea/coffee, cakes, chocolates and a bowl of lots of fruits. Dinner in the beautiful dining room was 5 courses and excellent, as was breakfast the following morning before we were waved off on our journey by the very hospitable Helena and Kobus. We hope to return.
