Olifants Rest Camp

I agree with previous reviewers that a bungalow with a view of the river is essential in this camp for full enjoyment, but the camp is great even if you cannot get one of these chalets. We had number 11 which was right on the edge high above the river and was magnificent. Accommodation is good ParksBoard stuff, well equipped and clean. The bungalows at the front are quite large. Would definitely go back.

Room Tip: If you can book a bungalow with a view of the river all the better. Look for a "V" in the...

The location is stunning, and it is the reason why I would get four stars. The view is worth the stay. The rondavel was OK (let's say OK), ... and the restaurant is disappointing (as it is often the case in the Kruger National Park), but, once again, what a view!

It was our first experience with Kruger accomodation, and we were not dissapointed. Check in is very efficient, the Rondavels are nice. In Olifants we had a rondavel which was a bit old, but still clean and comfortabel. A view at the river is absolutely a plus!

Room Tip: try to book a rondavel with view!

The Camp with the best view in the KNP. Fantastic views of the Olifants river flowing below the camp. There is a lovely restaurant and a shop which sells a wide variety of food stuff and curios. We were fortunate with the animal sightings and were lucky enough to encounter a pack of hyena with their pups.

Room Tip: Ask for a unit with river views. A bit more expensive, but well worth the extra charge.

We booked a 3 sleeper bungalow, it was in the 3rd row back from the riverview (definately spring for the accomodation with the front row views!) There was a shower, fridge, table and braai pit. The communal kitchen had boiled water and a hotplate but there were no utensils, so we just used the braai pit for food, especially as the restaurant was very overpriced. The porch area was open. The room - bathroom, linen, matresses etc seemed a bit run down and we didn't really see any wildlife from the camp despite the very scenic river overlook. We did see a good amount of wildlife driving around the area but we thought Letaba was a bit better on both viewing and camp. We did a night drive which was a really fun part of our experience. We thought it would be a nice central location to access the different parts of the park, but it seems that Sabie would have been better for that. We had higher expectations than we should have because of recommendations and the scenery, this was not the best value in the park.

Olifants has to be the best camp in the park. The position is beautiful, the camp is clean and neat and there is plenty of game in the vicinity. We stayed in unit 4 which has a river view. If you stay here, book early and ensure a unit with a view. We braai'ed on the first night and facilities for this at the units are excellent. We ate at the restaurant on the second night and the service and menu were average without distracting too much from the experience. We took a night drive which was also lots of fun. My 7 year old loved it and the guide was fun and knowledgable. This will be my default camp in future.

Been to the Kruger since childhood and Olifants still remains my favourite of all the "bigger" rest camps run by Sanparks. Its the location and view that makes the difference, so if possible book accommodation along the perimeter and stay more than one night to enable you to unpack and return to this tranquil setting after a day of game viewing as that is what Olifants is all about. Sitting on your verandah watching the river and animals coming to drink, is the perfect end to a special Kruger day.
We went basic, a rondavel (small round hut) with two single beds, shower and air conditioning. No frills but there is a fridge and a barbeque outside. If you want to enjoy breakfast on the veranda, remember to bring along, or buy some cheap cutlery, crockery, mugs and a kettle at a supermarket along the way, as this is not provided. Then enjoy a lovely breakfast of muesli, yoghurt, fruits and of course coffee and rusks on the veranda. Groceries can be bought at the camp shop. We ate supper at the restaurant, where we choose the "special of the day" which was consistently good but nothing to write home about.
A stay at Olifants is highly recommended - enjoy!
