“Terrific Value”
Reviewed March 3, 2008

Ok. So the food was pretty awful at times and our three bed bungalow was tired (but very adequate). But let's face it, you don't come here for luxury accommodation and gourmet food. The camp itself is very pleasant, the situation and views are stunning, most of the staff we found to be extremely helpful, and just about everything you could wish for (in a restcamp) is provided. We combined self drives and organised game drives and saw the big five and much much more within two of our three days here. We came with low expectations, given the price, and overall we were well satisfied.

Olifants has some fantastic views and we booked a riverside luxury hut. We were somewhat disappointed that when we turned up, our hut was basically in the middle of a building site with the views obstructed by hazard tape and deep ditches. We found the camp staff somewhat arrogant, with no attempt to forewarn us that there were extensive renovation works at the camp and indifferent view when we complained.

I suspect their view is that they are so popular they don't need to try. This was frustrating as we planned this over a year ago and booked the accommodation at the first opportunity.

I get the distinct feeling there is a degree of discrimination against international visitors as we seemed to have got the worst
accommodation on the camp and unlike SA residents, we are made to pay the National Park membership, regardless of whether you are going to visit the other parks or not.

Traditional style 3 bed bungalow (rondavel) with bathroom, fridge freezer, and access to kitchen in separate building.

Camp facilities include shop, restaurant & viewing area which overlooks a bend in the Olifants River, where we saw hippos and elephants. Interesting game drives in nearby plains and river valleys.

Booking via SANP web site was straightforward (though you do need to spend some time researching all the options to make sure you get just what you want). "Perimeter" location would have been better but not available when we booked.

We enjoyed a meal in the restaurant, which was much better than we had expected.

However, the highlight of our whole trip to the Kruger was the "Bush Braii" -- highly recommended!

My partner and I stayed one night at the wonderful Olifants Camp in Kruger Park. The camp is small, friendly and set on an overlook to the Olifants River, which attracts many animals. We saw elephants at the river and enjoyed watching the hippos. The accommodations were excellent, with very standard (yet incredibly comfortable) single beds, bathroom and nice veranda. There is a nice casual cafe (breakfast is excellent, lunch/dinner good), and a nicer buffet restaurant that looked excellent (R129 per person), store/curio shop and plenty of room to relax. We spent the afternoon enjoying the view and relaxing, had dinner and then went on a night ride where we saw hippo, elephant, hyena, owls and many other animals. I wish we would have stayed one extra night and done a morning drive or walk, and a bike ride. It took about six hours of driving from the Numbi Gate to Olifants, and although it is a long drive, enjoy the park along the way and when you get to Olifants you'll know it's worthwhile. Enjoy!
