In an unusual twist to my usual travel, I flew into the airstrip here at the start of my trip. The grounds are well cared for, the staff friendly, the rangers knowledgeable. This would be the perfect self-catered vacation stop for a single or family.

Skukuza is a bit of a zoo but reasonably well run. I would recommend renting a bungalow as they are well maintained and clean. Do not eat the prepared food in the cafeteria or go to the restaurant as the food is terrible. Animal viewing is fairly good but do not expect to see lions or leopards as they are more elusive in this area. Actually its more of being in the right place at the right time. The shop on the grounds is not too bad for snacks but the quality of souvenirs is definitely lacking however, this is not why you come here. You come here for the game drives. I found all staff I came in contact with to be very pleasant, very helpful. Be careful and listen to directions in order to avoid being ripped off by the resident baboons and monkeys. The rest camp is a good introduction to Kruger.

i stayed here over a busy weekend, i know its the biggest and busiest camp in the kruger but it needs some upgrades. i stayed in the safari tents, they have shared ablutions with the campers. clean but old furnishings, needs work.
make sure if you dining in the evening ask for the selati train restaurant, its the best option.

Firstly the location was incredible, right on the riverbank, you could hear the hippos getting in the water we were so close.
The safari tent however left a lot to be desired, the bathroom door had a missing panel and was hanging off its hinges, we were unable to close it so there was no privacy to be had. It was very basic which is fine as it was a tent but in urgent need of some updating, there appears to have been no refurbishment work undertaken in years.
It is one of south Africa's main tourist attractions and with that in mind I feel the accommodation throughout the park needs some TLC.
However it would not stop me for one moment from returning as sleeping in the bush and hearing the animals is a unique and wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Choose a tent on the perimeter for a close up and personnel bush experience

If you can only manage one night in Kruger National Park, Skukuza is the ideal place to stop given it's proximity to Nelspruit.

If you are on a longer visit it is worth staying at least a night before heading north to Satara, Olifants and Shingwedzi...

Game viewing is excellent but be prepared to push the limits of the Gate Opening / Closing times - please do not be late in (fines will be levied and rightly so) but do not waste a minute when you could be watching game.

The first hour after gates open and the last hour before they close are the best.

The road along the river from Lower Sabie to Skukuza has particularly good viewing in the last hour before darkness.

As for the camp, the Shop is well stocked, Organised Game Drives are well organised (and cheap), food in the restaurant is of an ok quality and staff helpful.

Huts are basic but clean. But who cares - you rarely see lions / cheetah / elephant in the wild 2 minutes drive from Sheraton / Courtyard Marriott!!!

Please do not speed in the park... you endanger the fauna but you will also miss that leopard asleep in the tree!

Bring binoculars is a must and also bring insect / mosquito repellant.

Room Tip: If you are a clean freak, bring your own sheets etc. Bedding is always clean but suffering from long...

As our entry point into Kruger Park, Skukuza was an easy destination to get to as it is quite near Paul Kruger entry gate and we had travelled that day from Johannesburg so did not want to be late into the park. Skukuza is one of the bigger rest camps and has great facilities also. The shop is large and is very well stocked with food, wine etc and gifts. There is also a fuel station. Our accommodations was in one of the guest cottages and it was very nice. Two bedrooms, both with en suite, a kitchen-lounge area and a lovely outside eating area. We booked a morning game drive which left at 5:30am and this was a gem. We managed to see a pride of lion right on the road and so many other animals. The first part is a bit hard as it is so dark still, but once the sun starts to come up, the animals start to move about and you can actually see them. First up you are just pointing two torches into the trees hoping for something. We were able to do two really good game drives ourselves during the day which took us through quite differing terrain and that meant different types of animals. Everything is well signposted but do buy a map book of the park. This makes life less of a guessing game as you drive up and down the roads. On our first day of driving we drove to Pretoriuskop Rest Camp and came across a herd of Sable Antelope. This was a very lucky event as there are not many of them and they are only in this area of the park. The rest camp made for a perfect lunch spot before we headed back to Skukuza via a different set of roads. Not far from the camp we saw a leopard lazing under a tree. So much to see in a short few days but so very worth it.

Not great but not terrible either.

The huts are old and very basic - ours didn't even have any cooking facilities. But the camp has a good range of faciliites including pool, ATMs, shops, etc. It's the largest camp in the Kruger so there are lots of guests but the facilities are good. It's also close the Phabeni and Paul Kruger gates so it's a good choice for first camp on a tour.
