“OUTSTANDING SAFARI LODGE”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Malewane safari lodge for a few days during a month safari in South Africa last May 2012. The lodge is rated a five start but we felt if their was a six star it would be rated as such. The lodge, rooms, service and food are excellent. We had very good game drives with lions, leopard and cheetahs being the highlights. We would definely like to do another stay here on our next safari to South Africa. A special thanks to our butler Andrew. Bob & Linda Nichols

I stayed at Royal Malewane for just one full day and I really did not want to leave. On arrival, we were treated to a breakfast served on the patio overlooking a watering home. Later, we transferred to our room, which is a short distance from the main building. We had a completely private accommodation with a private pool. While swimming in the heat of the day, elephants came calling for a drink of water and we remained still in the pool not to spook them. One of the elephants put his trunk in the water to drink. This was one of the scariest, yet exciting moment of my life. This place is everything 5 star should be and Mr Jackson, the GM knew his business which was to look after people and their wishes. I doubt if I can ever afford to stay there again, but if I could, I would visit there regularly.

My husband and I can't stop talking about our experience at RM this August. It was the trip of a lifetime, and we know that the memories will last forever. From the minute we arrived, we were treated like royalty. The staff greeted us with smiles and warm hospitality - we never experienced anything quite like it. I am still dreaming about Beatrice's delicious cooking and personalized menus, Ryan and Terrence's game drives (where we saw not only the big five on our first day, but the more rare big seven), Lloyd's help and constant attention throughout our stay, and the wonderful spa treatments Paula arranged for us. We felt pampered to the tee. I was so emotional on our last evening, I had tears in my eyes as we were served dinner on fine china, crystal, on a candle-lit table, in the middle of the bush. Did I mention the rooms are over the top? If you are going to South Africa on safari - RM IS A MUST! There is nothing in its class.

Room Tip: There are all perfection!

Honestly the best four days of my life. There is not one thing that me or my family could fault about Royal Malewane.

The service was impeccable and the staff were some of the loveliest people - they were there whenever we needed them and always with a huge smile which makes such a difference. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, always meeting us after our safari tours with drinks and peppermint towels.

The safari experience was just incredible. We saw all the Big Five and much much more. Our guide was fantastic - professional and friendly. I do not think that it can get much better than that. On our last day we were leaving very early but wanted to get the most out of our stay so asked if we could go on safari at 4am and they were more than happy to oblige, once again with a smile.

The food was absolutely amazing. The choice of food was great and the chef catered for all dietary requirements. However early we got up for safari the staff would have prepared the most amazing spread before we went out (our pre-breakfast). When we returned from our safari an even better spread would be ready for us and the cooked breakfast choice was fantastic. The lunches were amazing with a fantastic choice of light or heavier meals. The food was just fantastic, better than some of the top restaurants in London. the wine selection was great.

The facilities were fantastic too. We received complimentary massages with our lodge and they were great. Our rooms were beautiful with four poster beds and huge bathtubs. They were always impeccable and clean and the laundry service was great as it was same day service.

Just the most magical experience and i hope to go back again soon.

It isn't cheap but it won't get any better. You don't want to leave! Everything is included, except French champagne, if you drink the very good South African stuff there is no charge. The food is wonderful, the wine list is excellent, service excellent. The staff is wonderful, friendly and at ease yet professional. The game guides are also excellent; well trained and schooled, comfortable and a wealth of knowledge.

Room Tip: There are only 12, each is it's own "house", they are very private, have their own poo...

Royal Malewane is one of the top lodges in South Africa, and although priced accordingly, is truly impressive. Both the service and facilities are exceptional in every way. It has two large villas, several individual lodges and the Africa House, which is the most recent addition, which is a villa with six rooms. Animals roam around the buildings. As part of staying in one of the villas, we had a personal chef, butler and housekeeper, as well as our own ranger and tracker and a private pool. Our meals were prepared in our villa, and one night they even set us up with our own personal bonfire under the full moon. The food was overflowing and superb. Everyone was very friendly and focused on making sure we had an exceptional experience.
The rangers and trackers are among the highest trained and most credentialed in Africa. Our ranger, Craig, has 22 years of experience and is really passionate about his work. He is from the area and his dad and brother have also been rangers and run lodges. He and the other top ranger, Juan, have established an apprentice program to train guides and are raising the standards for guiding across the industry. They are two of only 34 with top ranger credentials across all of South Africa’s 7,000 active rangers.
Craig’s expertise showed in the safaris that we took with him. We had amazing close-up viewings on each safari. We saw multiple leopards, a wild dog family with nine puppies, a cheetah with her cubs, a group of nearly 50 elephants, a lion and three two-year cubs, many buffalo, and much more. For all of these, we were within feet—and sometimes inches—of the animals, but Craig arranged this in a way that the animals did not feel uncomfortable. We also learned a lot from Craig about the animals and the industry.
If money is not a concern, you will definitely have an outstanding experience here.
