“Outstanding experience at RM”
Reviewed July 20, 2012

We stayed at Royal Malewane for 4 nights, and it far surpassed expectations. Our ranger, Jonathon, and tracker, Jonas, were extraordinary -- leopard, cheetah, cheetah with cubs, lions, elephants, white and BLACK rhinos, hippos, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest easily seen... Jonas spotted a pride of lions by seeing an ear behind a bush 200 yards from the road! The spa was one of the best I have ever encountered in years of luxury travel, and the architecture of it took your breath away. The service and dining were incredible. Highly recommended.

I have been staying at Royal Malewane on regular basis since opening of this lodge in 1999.It is my favourite lodge and each time I visit I find that it is getting better and better. Superb location , accomodation , food and service. The rangers and trackers are all excellent .
Also the spa is one of the best for all treatments.
I always love the private suites which come with private butler chef staff ranger tracker ..... a perfect break. And all the various surprises like private boma dinner or bedouin evening in the bush are memerable

Room Tip: Royal Suite is my favourite suite

We went to South Africa for our second honeymoon in November and spent half our time at Royal Malewane and half our time at Singita Lebombo. RM reminded us of a more colonial, traditional safari experience with very cool decor and accents. The service and people were amazing. Beautiful spa and pool. By contrast, Singita was much more modern. Both are certainly a five star experience - I can't imagine a safari experience being better. Loved the little touches at RM like champagne upon return from the evening game drives, the very personal and friendly services and the outdoor space in our room with the plunge pool. Highly recommended.

I was completely blown away by this lodge. The staff was friendly and consistently went above and beyond what was expected. The natural beauty of the lodge was stunning, but the lodge itself is decorated wonderfully, and majestic. We stayed in one of the private suites, which comes equipped with a personal butler and chef. The chef's food was incredible and completely flexible when it came to our tastes. The food was fresh and diverse even though we were in the middle of the bush. The ranger and tracker that we had for our game drives were so knowledgable and interesting. Plus, we saw the big five within the first 24 hours of our stay! During the three days we spent at Royal Malewane we saw a cheetah everyday, and saw a leopard on the drive from the airport to the lodge. Royal Malewane also has an excellent spa available. Honestly, I've travelled to some pretty amazing places, but this was truly a once in a life time experience. The staff manages to make you feel like family, the lodge is high end without being stuck up, and the exposure to wild life is unparalleled. If you're going to South Africa, Royal Malewane needs to be on your life.

We just came back from a visit to Africa where we stayed at the Royal Malewane and its sister property in Franschoek, La Residence. Both properties are tops in their respective areas but very different. The Royal Malewane is the ultimate in a luxury safari experience. The staff is cordial and provides a warm atmosphere. There are no set schedules for meals or activities and you can go into the dining area, which is not enclosed unless there is inclimate weather anytime you desire. The game drive guides are extremely knowledgeable. Our guide was Jon and his tracker was Jonas. They were able to find the two pride of Lions, the leopard mother and her two young offspring, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, etc., etc. Jon provided us with useful information on the wildlife. Mr. Jackson, the general manager since the Royal Malewane was opened was available and engaging. The "special" after drive dinners were a surprise and showed that the property really wanted to "Wow" you.

Room Tip: The odd numbered rooms have pools that the elephants have easy access to and sometimes you can see t...

Promise: This is a once-in-a-lifetime type of safari experience. There are plenty of amazing lodges in South Africa — I’ve been to a handful! Royal Malewane should be on your list. Intimate, run with loving care of an attentive owner; both the perfect safari-style chic and the laid back tasteful vibe make it one of the world’s very top lodges. Staff, food, services & amenities couldn’t be better — you’ll not want to leave.

Royal Malewane was the best game lodge we've experienced in four trips to Africa. The staff, accommodations and food were top notch. From viewing elephants drinking from our "private" plunge pool to an elegant dinner in the bush, the experience surpassed our expectations. Given that our Ranger (Juan) was a wildlife expert, his knowledge of Nikon and Canon SLRs was an added bonus. We plan to return....
