“Very nice accommodations in Kruger NP”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

I stayed her ein October 2012 with my wife on a trip through South Africa. We stayed at Berg-en-Dal for a day and a night on our way through Kruger NP. Like most other reviews, there are a lot of positive aspects of the hotel and grounds, with some parts that could have been made better.

The Pros:
- Big, spacious cabins, with 3 beds
- Full kitchenette contained within the cabin, with great lighting
- Cabin backed right up to wilderness, allowing us to spot wildlife right outside the windows
- Everything worked well - sinks, air conditioning, hot/cold water, small appliances provided in kitchen
- Vaulted ceilings lent airy feel and further made the cabin feel huge
- Huge outdoor patio with grilling fixture, table, chairs, extra seating area - really nice

The Cons:
- The worst I can say is the bedding was threadbare - you can see holes in the "zebra-skin" comforters in my pictures, but the rest of the bedding was not great and thin
- There was a hole in the mortar of the brick surrounding the outside door - wasps kept going in and out of the hole on the outside, so I had to stuff some tissues in both sides as a temporary fix
- We found small ants in the kitchen area - they didn't seem to congregate or mass, but anyone that's messed with ants knows it's a potential problem.

Overall, I'd recommend Berg-en-Dal to anyone in the area in Kruger NP, it's worth a stay. If I had to stay a week or so, I might rethink the accommodations or at least request some fixes or a different cabin due to the hole near the door and the ants. But, really, Berg-en-Dal is a great place to use as a base camp in Kruger - have fun!

This camp suffers from its outskirt location within Kruger NP (South-West) from where your game spotting drives will pretty much all have to start off in the same direction, especially for a decent chance to see the big cats. In all fairness though, we liked it much better than Skukuza Rest Camp where location in top but cabins are poor. In Berg-en-Dal, we had a very large cabin with quite a nice bathroom (not too fancy or spacious but clean and modern-ish) and a fully equipped kitchen plus braai in patio area. (would give accomm 4/5)
What let our experience down a bit though (hence, the overall 3/5) was having to deal with very inefficiently working staff! This applied both to the reception and the cafe and cost us a substantial amount of time for very modest requests...

Stayed for three nights in chalet. Basic facilities for self catering. Hot plate, fridge and barbecue. Good ablution in terms of shower with hot water. Unit is air conditioned. The unit is serviced daily. Camp has restaurant and shop where you can buy all the necessary items, from deodorant to lamp chops. Salad greens and veggies when available. The camp has a laundromat and swimming pool. Great for children. Of course the park is all about the wild life, we saw the big five on day one within 5km of the camp. For tourist, a huge super Spar is located at Malelane outside the park for buying of all supplies. The Spar supermarket supplies everything you will need for your stay in the park.

Room Tip: Ask for a chalet on the fence.

Good and honest stay at this Kruger resort ! Basic lodges, restaurant facilities are the same in the whole of the kruger park. the rest and calm is very good. No noice, but early rise is necessary. Safe for big animals however snakes are in the area and within the lodgings area.

Room Tip: choose luxury rooms

The camp itself is of the standard you would expect at the price. Average restaurant and facilities, but all perfectly reasonable if you are only staying for a few days. The family cottage we stayed in was rather small with little room for luggage and food etc and as is normal for self catering accommodation in SA, the kitchen facilities were very limited. Also the lights throughout were incredibly weak so getting up and ready at 4.30am for a game drive felt quite grim.

The braii area was nice enough and as we spent most of our time outside the basic nature of the rooms didn't bother us too much. You'll be out on safari most of the time anyway! It's unfair to judge based on animal sightings as this is purely down to luck and the amount of time you spend out there, but we were incredibly fortunate to see 5 leopard and a family of lions!

After a stunning day out in Kruger Park, I checked in just before gate closure 6pm to find out that my chalet does not have power. Half the camp had a power failure for already 2 days. No candles provided. Self-catering in darkness but forget about using the stove or the cattle. Apparently SAN Parks tried to contact me but amongst 4 people who checked in with me at the same time, nobody had been contacted. May be because of no electricity bedding did not seem to be too clean. My bathroom looked like the tiler just run away to get some more grout. He came back next morning to finish job. I feel accommodation is not cheap in the park and expect better service. Staff is friendly and tries to be helpful but only a few people are skilled enough to handle and solve problems.

I give the camp a better rating, but I can't better jsn_chiaro's sept 2012 review when it comes to the ghastly design and architecture ! I have stayed at Berg en Dal three times and stopped off there for a walk several more, and despite the brickwork its still one of my favourites in the park for the following reasons :

Close to the Malelane gate, the nearest to Joburg, for those coming for short visits or for the first night of a longer trip, but feels like its deep in the wild

Spacious camp, lots of trees, always feel green and calm; location of cottages means you don't feel too on top of other guests when sitting outside for a braai (BBQ)

The perimeter walks are great for exercise and seeing wildlife through the fence, especially by the dam

Nice pool and lots of room for the kids to run around

Friendly staff in the shop (not always the case in the park). Well stocked with dry goods but don't look for anything fresh to be of good quality - get these in a supermarket outside the park

On the negative side, besides the brickwork, the restaurant food and service are terrible (as so often in the park)

Wildlife in a short drive of the camp is reasonable - we have had particularly good luck with rhino and buffalo

Room Tip: Look for one near the fence - but unlike other KNP camps if you can't get one of these don't...
