“Sometimes one person can make a trip that little bit more special!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2011

Spent 3 days in this relaxing lodge, the setting, style and relaxed atmosphere make for an excellent stay. While the food is very tasty it does get a little "samey" by the end of the stay! The rooms are tastefully decorated and extremely comfortable with a extra large bed! The main highlight of our stay was the fact that we got lucky with our ranger / game driver, Dennis, this was the big surprise of our trip, while remaining very modest Denis ensured that we were well looked after and although we were lucky it was due to his diligence that we managed to see all the big five on two separate drives. His keen eye were also essential to the enjoyment of some of the night drives, often finding animals in the most unusual of places. Without him the stay would have not been the same. I hope that should I return to Africa I will be able to find out where he is ranger and then plan my trip accordingly!

This hotel is really like a dream come true! The location, the service, the design, all is perfect.
The tsonga filosophie is to keep nature as the no. 1 priority, so there are no fences around the lodge. This makes the experience even more special.
We had the best ranger ever for our game drives, Dennis. He makes is fun and exciting. He found a lot of animals and would go after every interesting hint he would receive. We saw the big 5 within 1 day! His knowledge is very good and he likes to share this.
All together, a must go, this lodge!

We very much wanted to like this place considering the good reviews and that on first impressions, it appeared warm and inviting. However, our problems with hoya hoya, especially the level of service started almost immediately.

While all the staff were very warm and friendly, they seemed incompetent in everything else. they did not seem to be able to confirm our travel arrangements, provided us with wrong information, resulting in long expensive international telephone calls to our travel agent. While not difficult, it was just inconvenient considering we were on holiday and wanted to concentrate on the holidaying part.

our problems did not end there.

On our last morning, our travel wallet was stolen from our room. While no fault of the hotel management, the duty manager managed to convey that message loud and clear, insisting that his staff was all within the main lodge and could not possibly have been anywhere near our room. he proceed to accuse us of "perhaps mispacking our wallet" into our luggage and insisted on searching our bags himself.

while understandably this might have been hotel procedure, his approach was rude, and even mildly aggressive. After fumbling around our bags, he finally conceded that the wallet was not there and proceeded to follow me out of the room. lo and behold, there was the wallet on the ground outside, no doubt discarded by the fleeing thief.

instead of an apology, the manager's response was " you are very lucky, everything is fine now".

I take that leaving our wallet in my partners handbag and leaving it in the room for not more than half an hour might not have been the best thing to do in south africa but for a theft to occur in a self proclaimed luxury lodge was bad enough, what was more disappointing was the appalling service thereafter. with no effort what so ever to attempt to placate my wife and I, the manager jumped on the defensive and became extremely rude and hostile. hardly a way to treat distressed guest!

even with irrefutable evidence that a theft did occur, not a single word of apology was spoken.

to their credit, the staff were warm, inviting and attentive. The safari guide was also top rate.

While the service was good generally at all the normal run of the mill stuff, a good hotel shows when their guest are in need of assistance. unfortunately, from our experience, hoya hoya has someway to go.

A generally good place, but not a place you want to be if you need any other assistance in any way.

The staff personified "Hoyo Hoyo" which means "welcome" to the Tsonga people. This lodge took some serious getting to, but was well worth the journey. The lodge has a mix of experiences: family style meals for a nice mix of social interaction with other travelers (there are only 6 total chalets, so it's still pretty low key) yet individual chalets for privacy.

The game rides were fantastic--saw 4/5 of the Big Five including the elephant (see photo) just outside the lodge. Awakened to the sounds of lions one morning. Incomparable starry nights. Fantastic food enjoyed by the warmth of the fire pit nightly.

Main meals were brunch and evening dinner. Very early morning and late afternoon snacks provided prior to game rides (2x daily). Some snacks provided during the rides as well. Staff was extremely friendly. Optional services offered included in-room massages. Don't expect TV, wifi, etc. here. In room "phones" are really just an intercom of sorts for wake-up calls...a fellow guest managed to find connectivity in one spot on the main lodge deck. This lodge is an amazing opportunity to detach from the rest of the world and soak in the best of South Africa.

Rooms are cosy, charming, and air-conditioned. French glass doors open to private deck. Private outdoor shower was a nice touch as well! Will soon require updates to maintain highest level of detail.

Hoyo hoyo is a friendly, relaxed hotel for a safari

the rooms are good, spacious and clean, the communal area is nice, the staff are very friendly and the trackers are great!

The style of Hoyo hoyo is quite communal in the sense you all eat round a couple of big tables, that might not appeal to some people but we enjoyed it

good lodge

The Hoyo Hoyo was unlike anything I have experienced and I have traveled to many countries. I think the best part of the Hoyo Hoyo was the staff. They are from a local tribe and they really offer you that South African experience. They are so nice and they work so hard to give you the best. The huts are adorable and cozy while still being luxurious. The beds are heavenly and there is nothing better than sitting out on your deck while watching the animals. When I tell people that I stayed here they seem to think I went to some zoo but there was literally an elephant outside the main lodge just eating the bushes like it was no big deal. It was awesome. The food at the Hoyo Hoyo is also incredible. I dream about the food all the time!! Since it is far away from cities and lights you can look up at the night sky and see stars everywhere. The two daily game drives are so much fun and seeing the animals never gets old. If you tell the driver what animals you want to see they will drive you to them. The Hoyo Hoyo left me with great memories and I wouldn't stay anywhere else while in Kruger! I miss this place soooo much and I cannot wait to go back to see the staff and be in heaven once again.

PS: Don't let anyone lead you to think that the staff is anything but excellent. I don't know what kind of person would not like the most welcoming staff on this planet.

So often the memories of a good previous visit are tarnished when you choose to return. Not so for us at Hoyo Hoyo. We were there in Feb 09 and had a wonderful safari experience. Back we came in November and everything was as we wished, except the weather! Rain for four days and four nights but even that did not detract from the expectations we had brought with us from the UK. The lodge rooms are more spacious than they appear from outside, they offer every comfort, the food is first class and our Ranger Dennis was excellent. We had enjoyed the company of Ranger Elvis previously but our disappointment on hearing that he had moved on was soon dispelled, Dennis's company and humour was a joy despite him suffering the worst of the weather on the front of the safari truck. Hoyo Hoyo offers the best of all worlds, you have the pleasure of an excellent private luxury lodge operating as they do within their private concession but in addition they can traverse all of the Kruger Park. We saw all the big five and virtually every other species that lived in the area of the park we chose as our location.
One criticism we would make is that some of the furnishing are becoming tired. ie Curtains, floor matts and cushions in the room, all need replacing to ensure standards are upheld.
