Imbali Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 31, 2012

If you have time to visit only one game lodge in South Africa, make sure that you stay at Imbali Safari Lodge. We stayed at Imbali for 2 nights, and wished that we had booked for longer.

We have both stayed at many lodges in the Sabi Sands and Timbavati, but NEVER have we had such a wonderful experience at a lodge as what we did at Imbali.

The lodge is luxurious without being over the top; the room was spacious and well appointed with a lovely wooden deck over looking a dry river bed. There is also a splash pool on the deck.

The peace and quiet is what made Imbali special for us. We felt as though we were the only people there.

The staff are simply the nicest, friendliest people we have had the pleasure of meeting. And what makes this even more special is the fact that this is all genuine and not false at all. They all went out of their way to ensure that every request was met AND with a warm smile. They are attentive without being obtrusive.

Oscar is an amazing guide. He managed to show us wonderful game; 4 cheetah, 2 gorgeous male lions, beautiful civets, African Wild Cat, lovely owls, rhinos and elephant as well as buffalo. I could wax lyrical about the experience for hours. Oscar was entertaining and full of fascinating facts and stories that kept us spellbound for all 4 game drives that we did. He is definitely an asset to Imbali. He also arranged a visit to Hamiltons, where Given took me on a tour of the lodge. Hamiltons is also an option when we return.

We arranged for a massage on our deck; which again was out of this world. The cuisine was top notch and definitely contributed to an increase in waist size. While having breakfast one monrning, the water hole opposite the lodge was visited by a big herd of elephant; again a magical experience.

The lodge is situated deep in the Kruger National Park but is well worth the drive. We will definitely visit again, and would recommend Imbali to anyone wishing to stay at a 5 Star lodge in the greater Kruger National Park.

Room Tip: Room 9 is right at the end, which for us was perfect as it added to the peace and quiet.

This place is quintessential for people looking for a relaxed five star Safari ! All be it a good two hours from Hoedsprut airport the animals just as fun going in as going out ! we were lucky enough to see the big 5 as our guide Suitboy was incredible ! Imbali is all it is cracked up to be and more ! a must if you like luxury !

Room Tip: The rooms 1 though 8 are the ones on the dry river bed and the ones you have a chance to see action...

Its a place where you can forget the world. The room is super romantic. The food is personalized. The safari ranger is so well trained that you will relish your safaris for life. In the midst of the jungle, this lodge is a luxury. But yes, you got to pay a hefty price to enjoy this life time experience as the lodge is surely expensive. Also, the lodge is quite far from the airport (about 2-3 hours). So by the time you reach there, you will be super tired !

We stayed at Imbali for 3 nights and had a lovely stay here. The lodge is very nice, the rooms are spacious and nicely decorated and the private jacuzzi gives an extra luxury touch, but there should be an on-off switch so it could be switched off when not in use. The food was excellent and it is a perfect place to relax. The game drives were also very good, knowledgable guide and we saw lots of animals including leopard two times, lions with cubs and also the other big five. However, we would have appreciated a bit more focus on other animals besides the big five as well. All in all we recommend staying at Imbali, we had a great time!

We truly enjoyed our stay at the Imbali! A very nice and cozy hotel with great staff, charming rooms and good food. A highlight was the early morning safaris with our knowledgeable rangers. We saw all the Big 5 and spotted many, many more animals. Ending a busy day with dinner and drinks on the patio overlooking the river bed and the watering hole, just amazing! We felt very well taken care of and left with many wonderful memories!

We were disappointed by the lodge but loved being in the Kruger, the amazing animal density in the Satara - Orpen area as well as its diversity. We disliked the lack of attention to detail at the lodge, it needed a good springclean, it was scruffy and also needed a good maintenance inspection. The staff openly touted for personal tips which was also most annoying. Most well managed lodges have a pooling system or box for gratuities for the general staff.
