“Wonderful refurbishment”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

Shingwedzi Rest Camp has been beautifully repaired and refurbished and it was great to be back for 3 nights. The bungalow was excellent as always, the staff very efficient and the location and surrounds beautifully quiet. We've never seen so many elephants before, including lots of young and very young ones. Lovely birds and the Apple Leaf trees were in full flower - so much so that sometimes we drove over capets of pink and mauve.

We stayed here 1/10/13, checked in just before 6pm to find out the restaurant was still closed until further notice. Managed to get some frozen meat in the shop, which closes at 6.30, unfortunately this was the only place we stayed where there was no microwave to defrost stuff. Ran back to the shop and the guy there was very helpful and defrosted meat for us in the staff room. The cooking area at the front of the accommodation was large with a good sized table that comfortably sat 4,and a combined effort of cooking on the Braai and the 2 burner hob worked well. The semi detatched cottages were newly refurbished, set in a large circle, and came with a good sized, modern bathroom. We were only here for one night, but admired the way the camp was recovering from the flooding.

A very good one night stay in a very well refurbed room and bathroom.
The restaurant wasn't quite functioning so did a Braai, with food bought at P&P Polokwane on the way.
Didn't see much game so glad we only had the one night.

This rest camp was damaged by flooding in 2013, and is slowly being brought back with repairs and refurbishing. The camp I stayed in was clean and comfortable, but the big draw of Shingwedzi is the game watching. Someone in a previous review said it was for the hard-cord of the game watchers, and they were spot on correct. Just driving in and out of the camp may give you views of game you aren't going to see in other parts of Kruger. And because it is a long drive north for a lot of people, there aren't as many tourists breaking every rule of Kruger just to get a picture.

Room Tip: Until everything is repaired, I don't believe you'll have a great selection of camps. Once r...

Shingwedzi is the polar opposite of Skukuza - I believe really a camp only for hardened game watchers.

It is a long drive to get here but I believe worth every single kilometre you have to drive.

Accommodation is dated and in need of refurbishment (i did visit pre floods in early 2013) and the restaurant could do with staff being a little more keen / less apathetic, but the reception staff and shop staff are great.

For me the highlight at Shingwedzi was the very professional rangers / drivers on our morning trip. I have always enjoyed Satara but I believe that the organised drives at Shingwedzi are better - certainly I have had my best lion and leopard sightings on an organised drive here.

Sightings are less frequent than further south, but when you do find one they are exceptional.

Frequently the ATM and credit card facilities are not working at Shinwedzi so it is good practice to carry the Rand equivalent of $500 when in the north of the camp as fuel costs can build up quickly.

When we visited in late July 2013, repairs were well underway with many of the bungalows refurbished and re-opened following the January floods. The ablution blocks were clean and fully functional. The day visitors area was being repaved and the restaurant and shop were having a major overhaul. Staff were by helpful, despite their difficulties they were doing their best to sort everyone out.

The camp site is rather featureless but well maintained. However, it's location in the north of the park makes up for this. The proximity to the river is a plus point for viewing birds and animals.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Shingwedzi lies in the northern part of the Kruger National Park in the heart of Mopane country. A scenic game drive along the Shingwedzi River in a southeasterly direction towards the Kanniedood Dam is one of the most rewarding drives in the Park. Waterbuck, nyala, kudu and elephant are often seen here and the bird life is prolific. Staying overnight at Shingwedzi is an experience that will last a lifetime. It is a rustic camp that still carries the essence of the bush and is untouched by modern technology. Experience magical evenings where the accommodation is arranged in two separate circles and the glow emanating from braai (barbecue) stands cast a tranquil spell. ... more   less
