“monkeys, birds and braai: South Africa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2012

We stayed in a five-bed cottage. Three beds on the ground floor, two beds in the loft. Large bathroom and an outside kitchen with enough utensils. Basic, but well maintained and clean.
Around the cottage we saw many monkeys and bold birds who wanted to steal our food. The scenery around the restcamp is beautiful and serene. We had read on several websites that the amount of animals in the northern part of Kruger Park would be much lower than in the southern part, but we had a different experience. We saw many elepants, buffalos, giraffes, monkeys and many more.

Shingwedzi was the most northern camp we stayed in, for one night. We had a bungalow on the perimeter. It was slightly more dated than Mopani which we had stayed in the night before. The kitchen was a bit tired, and I have to say the hotplate looked like it could burn the bungalow down at any time, there was serious scorch marks on the plug. That said, we didn't use the kitchen facilities. It was the only bungalow we had that had a double bed as opposed to twins, so that was nice, but the bed spread was pretty filthy. It had an ensuite and an inside and outside dining area. The room was quite cold, and though it looked like there was a heating option on the air conditioner, there were no instructions and I could only get it to blow out cold air.

All of the camps provided hand and bath towels and a soap for each guest, and the kitchen was stocked with washing up liquid, dish cloth and tea towel, so you don't need to bring any of that stuff.

There was a shop and a restaurant. The restaurant was the same chain as the rest of the park, so while they offer a choice for vegetarians, over the week, the evening meal options were a bit samey, but I'm not complaining at all as there was much more choice than I expected - a breakfast option, toasties with chips, a wrap, a sandwich option, veggie burger and pizza. Although it is a chain, the pizza was completely different to the Mopani restaurant. I can recommend it.

The were lions roaring in the night and also hyenas calling to say a food source had been located.

This camp was more than reasonable for the money we spent, but I agree with some other reviewers that it is not on par with other SANPARKs resorts / camps. However, I woudl not let this put you off staying here - just manage your expectations accordingly.
It is situated in a lovely part of northern kruger and the area around the park is worth the drive, if only for the dam and the herds of elephants that frequent it. Also, the nearby river is filled wiht fishing eagles which capture their lunch and eat it in the treetops above you - we spent many an hour sitting outside camp watching them and getting some great shots.
I would, however, recommend that you use this place as a stop over on a longer trip - we stayed here two nights after already staying locally and did find ourselves running out of new places to game drive on the third morning.
We must have drawn the short straw to get one of the older cottages, and they really are showing their age. However, they are clean and do represent good value for money. We were located next to one of the newer family cottages which looked really nice indeed!
There is an on site restaurant which we ate in (lunch and breakfast)...it was fine, but we had nothing to compare it too as we did not eat at any of the other camps. The stop was not the best stocked - it seemed more geared to trinkets than groceries. but saying this, we managed to rustle up a lovely steak on the braai the two nights we were there so it was not all bad.
I have written up several blogs about the accommodation at SANPARKS to encourage family and friends to visit - I have further information on Shingwedzi here http://www.tarajiblue.com/2012/04/a-review-of-shingwedzi-kruger-national-park/

Room Tip: Choose one of the newer family cottages if your budget can stretch to it - they looked much nicer

I stayed in a Hut for 2 nights, the cheapest level of accommodation, and this had NO unrealistic expectations. However a dirty and sticky floor just disgusts me, so I cleaned it with a spare towel which was originally brown to start then black to finish.outside seemed clean initially, but then a slightly closer inspection revealed the hundreds of cigarette butts and bottle tops. The change rooms were the same, just a rushed cleaning job with NO attention to detail. This is just plain apathy and disregard from the cleaning staff and like the Restaurants staff EVERTHING and ANYTHING was just far too much trouble. I ate in 4 different camps over a 5 day period and the only one that was moderately reasonable was Olifants. I shudder realising that our valued overseas guests have to deal with these issues , which should , just simply be handled professionally and efficiently. As the ice machine was shut down for a while when I was there I had to use the local shop. 20 numbingly frustrating minutes later I managed to get out of there. Did someone Not tell management , this is PEAK season and to make provisions for extra staff to cope with an influx of people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course the swimming pool was well used , but you guessed it , it was full of leaves and dirt!!!!!!
Positives though, I looked in 2 of the much more expensive larger units though and they were a great improvement on any of the previous units I had stayed in and thus still offer pretty good value. I had good service at the fuel station and the attendant assisted me enthusiastically with a tyre change.
In all, the park is a nice place to escape the rat race, but it is highly recommended though, to do a large shop prior to arrival, if possible, so you don’t have to deal with the useless lazy staff at the restaurant and shop.

Room Tip: Upgrade if you can afford it, the new units are very nice.

This park is sufficient if you need a tidy kept place to stay over at.

Rooms were tidy and well kept. No green grass outside. Mopanie trees provide shade.

The swimming pool is still kept but age is starting to show.

Main reception area is clean. The smell of bat dung is very evident when under the thatch roof.

We stayed in a clean, spacious and functional chalet with a much appreciated double bed. We were able to eat outside in the retaurant overlooking a floodlit waterhole (dry when we were there). The food was fine and they were able to customise a veggie option for us (jacket potato). Not the height of luxury but recommended as a base to see some of the more northerly parts of Kruger.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Shingwedzi lies in the northern part of the Kruger National Park in the heart of Mopane country. A scenic game drive along the Shingwedzi River in a southeasterly direction towards the Kanniedood Dam is one of the most rewarding drives in the Park. Waterbuck, nyala, kudu and elephant are often seen here and the bird life is prolific. Staying overnight at Shingwedzi is an experience that will last a lifetime. It is a rustic camp that still carries the essence of the bush and is untouched by modern technology. Experience magical evenings where the accommodation is arranged in two separate circles and the glow emanating from braai (barbecue) stands cast a tranquil spell. ... more   less
