Collection from Joburg 7 hour journey there and 9 back in a small Toyota van. Very crampt and uncomfortable. Lunches not included as detailed in some descriptions. Accomodation very basic, dated with little upkeep. Meals also very basic with little choice. Kitchen hygiene standards were poor. Drinks including water availability was limited at the camp to when bar open from 7pm to 10pm only. We did the 3day safari. Only one good Krougar safari day out of the 3 days. 2 days effectively traveling but you start 9am first day, finish 9pm. Day 2, 7am to 5pm, Day 3 5.30am till 7pm. We did, however, see the big 5. Next time it will be with more basic comforts and not with Viva which would appear not to have invested or give much consideration to the guests experience.

Hi Duncan

I have been involved with tourists for over 40 years and from time to time, have had to deal with the odd miserable guest, who, despite having the good fortune of seeing the Big Five, sees fit to write a lot of nonsense.

The distance from JNB to Tremisana is over 500 km when we add the extra distance covered in fetching you from your home/hotel/hostel so as to ensure your safety. That distance requires 7 h if we drive so as to adhere to the speed limits. We have a 1h lunch break as required by law.
The vehicle is an airconditioned Toyota Quantum that is standard in the trade.

Lunches are NOT included in the 3 day safari packages so I am not sure where you get the idea that this is not the case "as detailed in some descriptions ". Which descriptions ? Absolute nonsense, (again) !

Our Camp Managers are appalled with your lies about "dated accommodation, with little upkeep" and " meals also very basic with little choice" . You stayed in chalet 4 with air conditioning and its own fridge and tea/coffee facility.
There is ample choice of food - read the previous 100 reviews !!!!

Water is available all day. Our hostess attends to all requests for drinks from 07h00 to 22h00.

Our kitchen staff have been with Viva for 25 years and know how to run a hygienic place.

It is clear to me that you had another issue that prompted you to write such a false review.

My wife and I went on a 3 night, 4 day safari at the Katekani lodge.

We got very lucky by seeing the big 5 within the first 24 hours and first two game drives which was amazing and we seen many other animals throughout the 4 days.

The day in Kruger National Park was great but, because of the distance to the park (40 minute drive one way), it felt a little bit rushed.

This didn’t diminish from the whole experience though in which we enjoyed fantastic accommodation and food as well as the thrill of seeing some incredible wildlife. The staff, from the rangers through to the chefs, hosts and cleaners, were all friendly and professional.

Absolutely brilliant company to go with if you want a great safari experience

We as humans need to remember that it is a privilege to view wild animals in their natural state. Thus, one could travel many times to the Kruger or any game reserve and not see a specific animal. However, your guides (Fortune, Rex, Patrick) make the maximum effort to ensure that you view as much as possible during your stay...and you definitely do! Your journey begins after being picked up at your accommodation (our driver Thabo was hilarious) and continues with a drive to the Kruger. Along the way you stop multiple times, especially for a pre-organised and tasty lunch in Dullstroom. Upon arrival at Tremisana Lodge, you are greeted with a warm welcome, and sent off on a sunset game drive and a truly South African candle-lit dinner in the bush. In the morning, after your coffee/tea, your adrenaline rushes as you are taken on a 4 hour bush walk among the wildlife and along the river while your guides provide further insight into the environment. You stop for a rest and a snack while listening to the birds, animals and river flowing. Later on, you go on an afternoon game drive and, upon return, are transferred to Marc’s Tent and Treehouse Lodge where you will meet your lovely and ever-smiling host Petunia and you will receive a 3 course dinner by the awesome masterchef Dudu. Day 3 you spend the entire day at the Kruger. In the morning you have breakfast at the lodge, lunch is at your own expense in the Kruger and another 3 course dinner is served at the lodge. Your guides are full of knowledge and ensure that you see as much as possible. Day 4, after breakfast you visit Moholoholo rehabilitation centre and gain further knowledge about our environmental and wildlife situation. Your guide Oscar is an excellent host and will definitely make you think more about others and your surroundings. Lunch is served back at the lodge, you have a few hours of well deserved free time. You end your day with an afternoon game drive and a 3 course dinner. This day was very special to me as it was my 21st birthday. Dudu surprised me with a coffee and chocolate birthday cake and we even saw a leopard for the first time during our stay! Day 5 is another full day in the Kruger, similar to day 4. Going twice to the Kruger is excellent as you get a second chance to spot those animals you have not seen the first time in the Kruger or during your other game drives in the privately owned reserves. Day 6 you have another but short early morning bush walk around the private Matlala reserve where your guide Jordan will provide you with more opportunities of seeing animals and learning. Who knew termite hills could be so cool? After your walk, you have your last delicious breakfast and say your goodbyes to the new family you have gained on your journey. Your drivers will take you along a different route to stop at the amazing Blyde River Canyon, lunch in Dullstroom and then to your accommodation. All in all, the rooms were clean, the staff were very helpful and the food was amazing. The bar is a cash bar, but you have the chance to get money from a bank at the Kruger Park. This is a must do trip! Even me, as a South African myself, will remember it for the rest of my life! Thank you to the team at Tremisana, Marc’s Camp, Moholoholo, the Kruger and everyone at Viva Safaris!

I did a 4 day Safari which was based across two locations. Pick-ups and returns from my hotel in Johannesburg were very smooth and all the activities (bar the bush walk which was abandoned due to the most amazing thunderstorm) were excellent. Guides were all friendly and knowledgeable. Food was good. All in all a great experience.
