Makalali Private Game Lodge

Although a lovely experience I think we have been spoilt by visiting better lodges over the past few years. The rangers (Marvel and Godlove) were great. Game viewing was average - although we did see 4 of the big five and cheetah. Lovely sighting of 13 lion! Food was disappointing. One of group was visiting a lodge for the first time and thought the experience was outstanding. Those of us who had been to other lodges before were less impressed.

We had stayed 4 days, if you love lions this is place to go, their current biggest pride is 22 Lions with two big males, huge with black and dark mains, they are super to look at and excellent for photographs, as they are so many in numbers they have to hunt daily, and excellent chance to see them feeding and trying to catch their prey, loved all other game, saw Leopard, huge breeding elephants, and lots of hyenas, its very well priced and nice stay, liked camp 1 with suspension bridge and privacy on bank of river

Room Tip: Camp 1 , super views and nice location , lots of privacy also

I cannot rate Makalali Private Game Lodge highly enough. The entire experience was fantastic, the epitome of 'Africa'. From the amazing accommodation, to the food, to the staff... the entire delivery was exceptional.

The animal experiences were phenomenal. We saw everything, and you get so close! The guides and trackers are what really make the experience, they are extremely knowledgeable, and completely respect the animals.

The beauty of the place cannot be described. I will be back again!

Room Tip: Make sure you close your doors if you prefer the monkeys not to come in for a visit (although that w...

We were lucky enough to spend some time at Makalali, camp one, on two occasions. Both times were fantastic! The staff is so dedicated and welcoming, the food is excellent and so beautifully presented, the attention to detail in accommodation, food and on game drives is amazing, and the little personal surprises wonderful! Our ranger Marvel and tracker Godlove went out of their way to ensure we got to see everything we could and as close as they could get us. Their dedication and pride was incredible, right down to their dusting of the landrover after several offroad bush treks, which always made us laugh. Makalali is a place of rest and as close to nature as one can get. What an awesome experience! Will definitely be back.

We stayed here for 4 nights at the start of a holiday in South Africa. The Lodge is great with very friendly staff and good food. The game drives were excellent and much enjoyed by our 3 children of 11 and 15, who saw everything they wanted and were really looked after by 2 very friendly and interesting rangers. The only very slight niggle was the waiting around at the airport for other flights to arrive from JoBurg and Cape Town.

We stayed at Makalali for 2 nights and we are going back in April this year again. Why? Because it is a beautiful relaxed place, where my husband fell in love with the bush. There are four camps all with a different vibe. Our personal favorite is Phiva, the most remote of the four. The rooms have a design we did not see before and the wood work is beautiful. We loved sitting outside on our private deck and watch the sun go down. The game drives are done with experienced rangers, who are passionate and listen to the guests. From big to very small game, they all got their attention. The food is more then sufficient and very tasty and the staff very friendly. Overall an amazing place with a very romantic and real bush feeling.

Having been here before, we were looking forward to our 2nd visit. What a disappointment!!! Standards have definitely slipped. The service and organisation was so bad, the food truly awful and housekeeping slapdash. The only saving grace was the game drives. Our ranger, Wise, is friendly and enthusiastic and went out of his way to make sure we all had a great experience in the bush.
