What a fantastic experience! This is the first private game reserve that caters for children to experience the wild in an open range rover and bush walks in Big 5 territory. We will definitely return!

Thank you for the time spent writing the review for Marula Camp. As we are a family orientated camp we have now also added a Playground as additional entertainment for our younger guests. Looking forward to having your family stay with us again in the future.

We had a lovely stay, tents were great and especially enjoyed patting the Cheetah Ntombi at the pool! The shared kitchens have an excellent setup with assigned cupboards (groceries) and separate fridges for each tent/cottage and good assortment of pots and pans, good quality utensils and crockery. Boma has a lit fire each night for braai/bbq. We all enjoyed the afternoon drives and morning walks. Learnt a lot about the local bush and animal behaviour and would like to get back here again. Staff all very friendly, polite and helpful. Definitely recommend staying here.

Thank you for taking the time to review Marula Camp. Ntombi, the resident cheetah of Marula Camp tends to laze around the pool as she was hand raised by Chris and Vicky Sussens. She is part of the family and enjoys the company of other "guests" around the pool. We hope to share this special experience with you again in the near future.

My wife and I felt very welcomed and cared for during our stay. The drives and walks we loved and learnt lots. Great to have Bushbabies in our room. Loved the cheetahs. We certainly enjoyed the rest. Great self catering services.

Recently we visited Tshukudu Lodge (Marula Camp) for the weekend. I must say I have grown with having game farm in Mesina my whole life, and thought that I was conversant with the whole "bush" idea. My girlfriend has never been on a game farm and I thought it good to treat her for the weekend. I must honestly say, that I had the experience of my life at Tshukudu, just shows you that there are places to experience out there that we never thought existed. I will definately return, very soon.

We had a lovely 3 night stay at Marula Camp. Vicky and Chris were great hosts who both made us feel very welcome. Chris' knowledge of the bush and the inhabiting wildlife is very impressive and we really enjoyed our game drives. We were able to do a bush walk alongside a female Cheetah and we saw the big 5 during our time there. Definitely well worth the visit.

Thank you for the time spent at Marula Camp and for the written review.
Chris completed a diploma in Wildlife Management in 1978/9 and this training has served him well in his capacity as Reserve Manager. Chris is very passionate about his role in conserving wildlife and this is evident when he does the morning walks and afternoon game drives. We are thrilled that you found his knowledge impressive and hope to see you again in the future.

I booked at Marula camp with some trepidation (having just spent 2 lovely if overpriced nights at another 5 star lodge in the area) as I was concerned that it would be more 'wildlife zoo' than authentic game reserve. However, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the 'semi-tame' animals walk around quite freely and come and go between reserve and the camp with no restriction, having been reintroduced to the wild, but choosing for various reasons to 'hang out' with mankind when it suits them. The two captive animals (one wild dog and one old King Cheetah female) are captive only because they are unable to be released into the wild. The game drive and bushwalk were informative, as Chris, the owner and our guide, was clearly experienced and knowledgable; the kind of person you can listen to for hours enthralled. The fact that he is still, after so many years, enthusiatic about wildlife, is clearly evident, where for so many others it has just become an industry sadly.
You will get exceptionally close to wild animals (lion and elephant) so the game drive is not for the feint-hearted, but at no point did I feel that we were at risk or that Chris didn't know what he was doing - and at one point I thought a rather large elephant was about to hop in the back of the vehicle with us!
Marula camp (we stayed in a tent) is very comfortable with no unnecessary frills that you will find at the 5-star places (who needs that anyway?), and provides all the necessities. The website pics of the accommodation don't do it justice and I'm glad we chose to stay there rather than at the main lodge. Self-catering facilities were great too, but since we were only staying for one night we ate at the main lodge. Dinner (R170) and breakfast (R120) were really not 5 star, but there was plenty of it (unlike the 5 star places), if somewhat overpriced for the average SA traveller. The staff are extremely friendly and hospitable, and as far as a value for money experience goes, Marula camp is the place to go for a night or two on your way to or from the Kruger, especially if all you saw in the Kruger were impala! I will most definitely be going back and taking my kids with next time... just to listen to more of Chris' stories is worth the trip there again!
