Blyde River Wilderness Lodge

Reviewed August 22, 2012

This turned out being our best accommodation we had this year in our summer holidays in South Africa. We've been to many places around the country and rated afterwards our choices. All of us ended up to the conclusion that this lodge can be our best. Don't let the long gravel road fool you while driving to the lodge the first day. It's a place completely secluded in the heart of nature! Pity we stayed there only two nights and not a week. It's a place you can relax and enjoy nature. Just by the river where you can see hippos or crocodiles, yet it is very safe (we did not face any problem at all)! Personnel behaviour was outstanding! People there were very sweet and friendly, AMAZING! Breakfast was rich and dinner (both nights we had dinner at the lodge) was prepared to perfection! Delicious! Rooms were beautiful and comfortable. If I had to change one thing only, that would be some details in the bathroom (i think curtains and tiles were not matching the rest of the concept) but this is really just a minimal thing that doesn't have to do anything to how beautiful was the whole thing. I bet, in the summer, enjoying the swimming pool (which we didn't as it was still quite cold) will be fantastic! Highly recommended!

The location is amazing, on the blyde river shores with a very nice garden and a wonderful game lodge. Service is very warm and efficient. We had a very nice dinner at a reasonable price. Rooms are big and very well decorated... Few more details could make the difference (no hairdryer, no internet connection, no complimentary water). The only real negative point is the tough 6 km dirt road to lead that leads to the lodge takes 15 minutes in total). But the peace and relax of the location pays back

We spent 1 night at Blyde River Wilderness Lodge recently and what a perfect venue surrounded by the lovely Drakensberg mountains. A 50 minute drive to the Kruger National Park. The accommodation in the rondawel was ever so pleasant. We had a lovely double bed fitted with clean and warm bedding. In the evening we made a lovely “bonfire outside and later my husband did a barbeque. We were ever so fortunate to have the hippos “laughing” right across our rondawel in the Blyde river. The beautiful pool and deck with sun chairs overlooking the river will be fantastic to use in the summer. We feel that the fridge could be fitted with drinks and snacks which one can purchase. Otherwise it is good value for money and we will certainly recommend staying there.

This place is fabulous. There is no other word for it- it is peaceful, beautiful, comfortable, reasonable and run in a relaxed way by Jenna and Cynthia. We took the family to 9 places on our trip, but the one they all talk about is this one. Where else can you watch the hippos close up, have a horse put its head through the door at breakfast, touch antelope in the garden as you sit round a braai at night and give way to giraffe and zebra on your way to the shops? There is a pool and a massage service; my wife and daughter rated it highly.
I really was a bit hesitant as I went down the dust road following our directions, but seldom have I been so reluctant to leave a new place. It was fabulous. I can't recommend it enough. Loved it, and we will be back.

We found the lodge via Tripadvisor, and was honestly not too sure what we ordered. We found the most charming lodge, with a very nice and romantic atmosphere. It's a great place for a getaway.Very pleasant personnel, good food and really close to the beatiful nature. We had 5 Hippo's in the backyard.

‘We had a very pleasant stay at the Lodge and wish we had booked for longer. Wonderfully relaxing with a river flowing at the bottom of where our accommodation was. We were sitting, reading when a small herd of deer walked by! The staff were friendly and obliging and Cynthia, the manager, outstanding. Food was excellent, a great selection for breakfast and dinner outstanding. The chef made a tasty vegetarian meal for my daughter at short notice’.

our stay at the Blyde River Wilderness lodge was a last minute change of plans in our trip through South Africa and thank God we did it!
the way to drive there is a bit long and rocky (especially if you have a very small car like our rental Hyundai Atos!) but totally doable and so worth it!
you arrive in the bush but with all the comfort. this is how we dreamed a lodge would look like!
We arrived after a long tiring drive and could enjoy the pool
Please do yourself a favor and have diner there (190 Rand 3 course meal); It is delicious. We had diner alone outside on the balcony. The breakfast in the morning was also delicious and we had choice between everything.
The owner (and all staff) is very friendly and helpful. He helped us plan the rest our trip (basically!) and reput some air in our tires before we left!
In the end we just wondered: what more do those very very expensive lodges have?!
