“Fairmont Zimbali - Awesome Hotel and outstanding service!”
Reviewed August 22, 2010

Myself and a friend recently had the pleasure of staying at the Fairmont Zimbali and we can't wait to go back. The Hotel is beautifully designed and decorated, the service was outstanding and it has everything one needs for a relaxing weekend away, i.e Spa, Gym, Pools, Beach and a wide variety of restaurants with great food. I can highly recommend the Hotel and we will definitely be going back, thanks Fairmont for a wonderful experience.

When you arrive at Fairmont Zimbali Lodge it looks idyllic. It is built into one of the last remaining indigenous coastal forest. Great welcome, staff is all smiles. Then off to the Thandi Restaurant. Limited menu and completely overpriced. The fillet steak I had was dry and served with microwaved vegetables. And then there are the cockroaches. I killed eight 6 inch Durban roaches in my room. And yes they are carnivorous and fed on the remains of their fallen brothers. My complaint about this was met with complete indifference when I checked out. So unless you want to stay at an overpriced cock roached infested inn in the bush, then stay away. Or make sure you don't mind roaches.

Stayed in Block6 for 3 nights before Xmas - and had really poor weather - so didnt get to enjoy the best of the resort - ie the pools and outdoor areas. The horseriding was actually cancelled due to the weather! This might have coloured our view but it meant that the focus was the food instead - which we found VERY disappointing in the main restaurant. Much preferred the new Ayoba bar but this is small and finishes at 9pm so you need to book ahead. Do not have the hot buffet in the main restaurant (bfast or dinner) as they dont keep it hot! Not good - food is as an average tourist hotel - not value for money at all.

Not a lot to say really. 5 star it certainly was.
our bedroom was a little dark (as one other reviewer said). dark oak interior deep in the middle of a firest means that unless you have great interior lightoing it will always be dark.
pool area was great and also the poolside bar.
as for the food, stick to the durban curries they were great.
golf course is a must.
for the price of the room however we were a little let down and thought the staff coukld have been more helpful.

Like the previous review we stayed during a very busy time as in excess of 60 British & Irish Lions supporters descended around lunch time.

Check in was very efficient and luggage was moved into the rooms without incident. We were transported to our rooms by buggy carts. Some of the rooms do not have a great view, but the veranda is very pleasant & overlooks the trees etc.

The bar and terrace is excellent with stunning views of the sea or golf course below, There are comfortable seats and a good bar menu and wine list. Service is first class with all staff very attentive.
The restaurant provides great food and the dinner menu was very good indeed. Breakfast was outstanding both with the views from the restaurant in the morning and the selection and choice of food. My abiding memory was the perfect tranquility of breakfasting outside on the decking the sunshine.
A courtesy bus takes you down to the pool, which is just perfect, with sun loungers & small unlicensed snack bar located beside it.
Despite the disappointment of the result of the first test the stay in Zimbali was really really enjoyable and memorable .
The staff were really first class and helpful. at all times and could not have been more professional.

We stayed for 3 nights during a very busy period (British Lions touring) and despite the hotel being full the service was excellent. The staff could not do enough for us and dinner was lovely - if a bit expensive. However the drinks are reasonably priced. Having breakfast outside overlooking the pool with the Indian Ocean in the distance is hard to beat! The rooms are beautifully laid out, with a large balcony but unless you are in block 7 or 8 you have virtually no view and this does make the rooms a bit dark. However, this did not detract from the lovely walk down to the beach pool bar and I can recommend an hours horse riding - a gentle meander on very well looked after ponies which includes a fantastic walk along the beach with the waves of the ocean crashing a few yards away from you. A fantastic place which we would return to.

Very overrated and not that good.

The lodges themselves are finished in very dark style which with the dim lighting and high trees outside makes them seem very dark and oppressive inside with the dark floors, dark ceilings, dark furniture and dark everything.

Even though the resort seems only about ten years old it would seem very much more dated than that with its very traditional dark wood style everywhere.

Although the grounds are very nice and security in and out is very impressive there is only one bus per hour down to the beach area – surely there should be more or be available on request.

The restaurant was good but our daughter did not receive her steak one night although the waiter did remember that he had not brought it to us on the following night! The breakfasts were very good but overall the resort seemed more geared to trying to get you to buy a chalet or property within the resort (IFA RESORTS) rather than trying to provide a proper hotel in which guests were welcome.

Overall a disappointment and not somewhere we would wish to return to.
