As we are getting closer to the birth of our first child, Hubby and I decided to go on a little “Babymoon”, aka last holiday just the two of us before the little one arrives. After spending lots of time on the internet looking for the perfect accommodation, we found Coco De Mer and booked for the weekend after Valentines Day. Situated mere walking distances from the beach, we were pleasantly surprised to find this lovely hotel. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the very friendly and accommodating front desk staff that showed us to our room. The rooms are very spacious, lovely decorated, comfy beds, a great ocean view (we stayed in room 4), Tv (with only 6 working channels) a small bar fridge, coffee and tea facilities and a beautiful bathroom. The Hotel has a restaurant on-site that serves breakfast, lunch as well as dinner. We decided to have dinner one evening and again, the dinner staff was great. Hubby ordered the Fillet with Pepperdew sauce for his main meal and the “dessert of the day”, which consisted of Lindt Chocolate covered in Pastry, served with Ice Cream and a shot of Amarula. He couldn’t stop complimenting the Manager for the delicious food and literally cleared his plate. I ordered the Calamari for my main meal and the Crème Brule for dessert. I was very disappointed. The calamari was covered in black pepper (even thought the menu doesn’t mention anything about black pepper) and the Crème Brule was just as disappointing. The sugar on top was so hard; I couldn’t even crack it with a knife. Breakfast was somewhat a different story. It’s served from 7 – 10 every morning. The breakfast staff is not friendly and although there was a great variety of food to choose from, it was all cold. We thought this might have been due to us only arriving for breakfast at 09:00, so the next morning we went at 07:30. Again the staff was very rude (even if you ask for a coffee, the only response you get is a nod). They only serve 2 types of juices with breakfast and since hubby is allergic to orange juice he had to order something else to drink. They then charged us for it, as well as the cappuccino’s we had with our breakfast. Given the price one pays for the accommodation, one would think that it would be on the house. None the less, we had an amazing time in Ballito and aside from our atrocious breakfast experience; I would definitely recommend this hotel.
