“Lovely accommodation close to the beach”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

As we are getting closer to the birth of our first child, Hubby and I decided to go on a little “Babymoon”, aka last holiday just the two of us before the little one arrives. After spending lots of time on the internet looking for the perfect accommodation, we found Coco De Mer and booked for the weekend after Valentines Day. Situated mere walking distances from the beach, we were pleasantly surprised to find this lovely hotel. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the very friendly and accommodating front desk staff that showed us to our room. The rooms are very spacious, lovely decorated, comfy beds, a great ocean view (we stayed in room 4), Tv (with only 6 working channels) a small bar fridge, coffee and tea facilities and a beautiful bathroom. The Hotel has a restaurant on-site that serves breakfast, lunch as well as dinner. We decided to have dinner one evening and again, the dinner staff was great. Hubby ordered the Fillet with Pepperdew sauce for his main meal and the “dessert of the day”, which consisted of Lindt Chocolate covered in Pastry, served with Ice Cream and a shot of Amarula. He couldn’t stop complimenting the Manager for the delicious food and literally cleared his plate. I ordered the Calamari for my main meal and the Crème Brule for dessert. I was very disappointed. The calamari was covered in black pepper (even thought the menu doesn’t mention anything about black pepper) and the Crème Brule was just as disappointing. The sugar on top was so hard; I couldn’t even crack it with a knife. Breakfast was somewhat a different story. It’s served from 7 – 10 every morning. The breakfast staff is not friendly and although there was a great variety of food to choose from, it was all cold. We thought this might have been due to us only arriving for breakfast at 09:00, so the next morning we went at 07:30. Again the staff was very rude (even if you ask for a coffee, the only response you get is a nod). They only serve 2 types of juices with breakfast and since hubby is allergic to orange juice he had to order something else to drink. They then charged us for it, as well as the cappuccino’s we had with our breakfast. Given the price one pays for the accommodation, one would think that it would be on the house. None the less, we had an amazing time in Ballito and aside from our atrocious breakfast experience; I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: For the best ocean view, book room 3 or 4.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Coco in November of 2012, and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Coco is a hidden gem amongst the greater DBN hotels, and offers a setting on par with the best boutiques in the country.

The rooms are large and very tastefully styled, with an evident attention to detail. The bathroom is similarly well styled, with the enormous shower a particular pleasure of the room.

We chose a room with a garden view, and were extremely pleased with our choice. The garden is well designed, and the animal sounds towards the afternoon creates a certain ambiance to the experience. The sea view will be slightly obscured by hotels/houses, so take this into consideration when choosing a room with a sea view..

We had no problems with the room service, and the food from the restaurant was a pleasant surprise - we regretted only trying it on Saturday night!

All in all, a great hotel with close proximities to all that you will require from Ballito. We will be back!

I booked a sea-facing suite and was greeted by a beautiful, tastefully-decorated split level room incorporating a giant king size bed, a small desk/console and a walk-in bathroom featuring giant tub and rain shower. Magnificent appointment in a gorgeous setting. A few niggles include the fact that sea-facing means that the se is in the distance obscured by other properties, the aircon unit is tiny and underpowered to deal with a room of this size and the bathroom is a little lacking in amenities i.e. no bubble bath or bath salts for the tub. Other than those minor issues, everything was wonderful. The breakfast was great and the staff were friendly and helpful. I will certainly stay there again.

We chose Coco de Mer on the strength of Tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. While the outside view does not look special, once inside, the garden is tranquil and the sea view rooms are spacious, though steps in to the bedroom area could be a difficulty for some. The hotel is situated one street back from the sea, so your view has buildings as well. Staff were friendly and helpful and one lady on reception remembered our names. The garden area is a wonderful place to read a book or to wait for a treatment from the day spa located on the premises, a plus we discovered after having booked.

Room Tip: Next time I would go for the forest view rooms - no traffic sounds.

I recently had the pleasure of hiring this hotel for my daughters wedding....and stayed for 5ngts....The overall impression is impressive...lacking a few touches which would elevate its status.....however, on reflection the rooms were clean and furnished tastefully....the gardens are beautiful. the staff were generally very helpful and pleasant.....and one can walk to the beach in a few minutes with the Lifestyle centre (mall) a short drive away. The restaurant once again needs to be a bit more organised with service a bit disorganised (it would seem to be the kitchen)....Room service also needs to be upgraded with more attention to detail...However,, the food was superb and the steaks according to the guests were of a very high quality....In general I would recommend this hotel for both food and accomodation as it has a special ambience....I brought the failings to the attention of the owners who were most appreciative and apologetic. ..after all this,I would definitely stay again ....

Room Tip: The front rooms are all sea facing contemporary style...However, there are steps from the living ar...

Stayed here for three days in July on a great winter rate. The hotel is clean, modern and with very friendly service. The room we had was modern with a great bed and a wonderful bathroom. The beach is only 2 min by feet. Thanks for a great stay and we hope to visit again one day.

We spent three days using the conference facility and accommodation. Room was great with a view of the sea. We had dinner on the first night, the food was good but service poor, we waited an hour for our starter and another hour for the main - we were a table of 14! Staff were friendly and helpful. Quality of the food is good. Would recommend a stay

Room Tip: good conference facility
