“Lovely. Stay more than a night!”
Reviewed May 3, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here as part of our honeymoon in one of the self catering chalets. Unbelievable view. Well equipped chalet. We couldn't order any more of the packages for eg BBQ because it had to be done the day before but no problem since a small supermarket was close by. Very romantic setting and the staff did the rear with nicely decorated room, friendliness, very good breakfast. Nothing to criticize. Perfect stop on the garden route to give you 'homely' feeling :-) only regret: that we didn't stay longer !!!!

I had an amazing time at this lodge, it was my first time there but i would love to visit there again. The service was good and staff friendly the breakfast was lovely and the view is too die for.

This lodge is a must see in the wilderness.

We stayed at Boardwalk Lodge for just one night. We had stayed before in the small apartment but upgraded to one of the luxury cabins this time. The one we stayed in was number 6 which thankfully was only one set of steps up from the parking - number 10 is quite a hike! The bedrooms and bathrooms were very luxurious, the lounge/kitchen area is all wood clad so very "cabiny" which makes it feel less luxurious in my opinion. The views are fabulous and we were instantly relaxed on the sizeable decking with a glass of wine, worth it for the view. I would not recommend for families with small children - if you get a cabin up many flights of stairs it would be a nightmare and the fencing is only a couple of wood poles so not really child proof for any adventurous toddlers!

Lodge is set high on the hillside above Wilderness, with spectacular views over the estuary, beach and ocean. Our room had a direct view of the scene either from our balcony or sitting up in bed. Magic!

Pool and garden area are brilliant, with excellent views. Loungers would benefit from cushions, but there is a comfy sitting area (with wifi) under a large tree.

You might find references to breakfast costs in your B+B booking form. Somewhat confusing I thought, although the explanation is simple - the lodge has B+B rooms and self catering chalets. Why put Ts&Cs that don't apply on a B+B form I ask myself?

Getting up there, to the rooms, if you are not 100% fit is an issue however as there are LOTS of steps. To be fair, the website is candid on this subject if you read carefully, but be advised.

Rooms are fairly small and the bed is very small, short and uncomfortable by SA standards. A big minus in my view, but the room was comfortable enough otherwise. Bathrooms are OK, with good showers, but towels - at least the ones we had - were sub-standard for accommodation of this class.

Breakfasts were OK, with food cooked to order. I thought "sumptuous" in the website text a little over the top. A sumptuous breakfast would have had a better selection of fruit; fresh, not processed, fruit juice; some pastries and croissants on offer and quite a number of other things as well. Some overselling here I think!

Staff are excellent at the Lodge, ever helpful and willing and made a big contribution to our pleasant stay in this stunning location. Just a pity that the actual accommodation and breakfast were not as good as we had hoped for or expected.

these guys a pretty clueless. they've clearly invested a lot into building the lodges but there is zero service and this is what makes the difference in a place that pretends to be more than a roof. we were right at the top of a steep outdoor walkway (about 8 flights of stairs) which was almost ok but the lodges are self-catering so you have to carry all your luggage, food, kids up yourself. the porters work v limited hours so are never there when you need them. the reception staff haven't got a clue about the area so can't tell you where to find the national park entrance, hire a canoe or anything. that's ok in a cheap place, but not here. gas fire didn't work, one heater was broken and the weather was rough when we were there so this turned out to be important. they seemed more concerned about us paying the balance of our bill rather than whether we were comfortable.

steer clear - this place is a roll of the dice

As one of the other reviewers notes, boardwalk lodge sells itself as a dream venue, and this is far from the reality. Don't be deceived. We were prepared to splash out for a little indulgence for this part of our trip and what a huge disappointment! Really pathetic service, compounding the fact that our lodge ended up bring the steepest hike up from the cars - a good five minutes of steep stairs... So you really need some ready porters to help with two kids and a larder of food, which didn't happen. The pool was ten mins away, down the same steep descent, and as there was no beach house or toilet by the pool, we barely used it (and noted no one else did either). The kitchen was poorly equipped, the heaters and gas effect fire didn't work, so we spent new years eve sleeping in one double bedroom together to fight off the cold (it does get cold at night even in the summer, but they seem unaware of this). The reception staff couldn't answer the most basic questions about local activities, and were mainly focused on getting the remainder of our payment from the moment we arrived. An advert at reception selling two of the properties as investments made it blatently clear that this is a real estate business rather than a luxury holiday venue. There are far more beautiful places to stay around here, with much better views (the view of the road was also disappointing). In general I would recommend steering away from wilderness itself - it has become rather overdeveloped with retirement homes and cheap apartment complexes, though the surrounding walks are fantastic.
