We arrived and Albert immediately whisked us to have a cup of tea after our long journey and put us right in front of the view of the beach. Fantastic! Our luck was also in when we were offered an upgrade to the Neptune Suite for slightly more than our pre-booked room. Stunning views indeed! A great little sitting area, comfortable sleeping area and.... our own private deck overlooking the beach.

Albert heartily recommended a local steak restaurant for our first evening meal, Joplins, and we were not disappointed. Make sure you go there when in Wilderness - bookings are a must!

Back to breakfast and it's served in the dining area looking over the beach. All guests sit around the same table, ready to exchange a story or two about places to visit in the local area. It's a buffet style breakfast for the fruit, cereals and also the hot breakfast, but forever being topped up.

Room Tip: Eat at Joplin's!

We could not be more pleased with our room and the ambience of this place. It is like walking into the pages of the best interior design magazine. Albert and Tersai are so friendly and helpful, they booked us restaurants and advised every day what to see and do. We were warmly welcomed and we felt pampered. They anticipated our needs in every way. We so enjoyed the fruit salad and choice of bread, croissants and muffins every morning topped up with as much coffee as we could drink. The location is stunning, and we spent a long long time watching the rolling waves in the Indian Ocean at the foot of the beautiful garden, right under our window. We came here on the recommenedation of friends and will certainly be telling our other friends this place is a must. In my 13 years as a Quality Advisor in the tourism industry, I have yet to see a place to top this one. I took many pictures. Well done you two, and your staff.

The view is fantastic. The rest does not even meet a 4 stars standard. We had to carry our suitcases by ourselves to the rooms (no lifts), the only staff during the three days at this place was a cleaning lady who also prepared breakfast in the morning. The breakfast for all guests is served on one round table (no opportunities to be on your own). Breakfast were eggs and sausages, one platter with cheese and ham still wrapped in the supermarket plastic packing (!), jam and honey.

Room Tip: Don't expect more than a fantastic view

Dear Nick,
*If you failed to notice myself , Albert and my wife Tersia during your stay , as you claim , then surely you are confusing XANADU with somewhere else you stayed.
* Either Tersia or Albert or both are in the public areas of the guesthouse 24/7. In Fact Tersia prepares the breakfast personally and interact with the guests to get their special requests perfected!
* You fail to mention that there are three(3) dining areas , two(2) areas where a couple or a family can dine separate from other guests?
*What you see on our website is not what you get , you get much BETTER.
*The next time you visit South Africa , please visit us for a complimentary stay and while you are here and you find something about XANADU or the hosts or personnel , that is out of line or does not conform to the guidelines , criteria , set for 5 star guesthouses , please point it out to us in order to rectify our act. Life happens and small things happen or break , but as it does , we fix it!

We stayed at Xanadu for three nights and wish we had booked for longer. We were extremely fortunate to be given the Presidential suite and we were speechless when we saw it. In fact the whole experience of walking in through the massive carved door into a spacious classy environment with views over the ocean from the front door was superb in itself, but when we were taken to our room, we had to pinch ourselves as no-one would ever imagine we were in a holiday villa. The standard of everything everywhere in the villa is of high class. There is no expense spared in making the place look good. I have stayed in 5* hotels in many cities and never had such luxury. The standards of everything, cleanliness, breakfasts and general service were exceptional.
The hosts were extremely friendly and made us feel really welcome, and nothing was too much trouble. Albert was always on hand to help and provide advice on the area, and sorted our restaurant bookings.
The setting of the villa is one to die for. Superb views, fabulous gardens and great beach.
Our visit has given us one problem though, everywhere we stay will never come up to the experience we had there. If you ever think of going to the Garden route, forget staying in Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, stay at Xanadu, and drive there. You will not find accomodation like Xanadu in those towns.
The only thing that remains for me to say is to thank Albert & Tersia for our wonderful time. We will be back some day - that's for sure!

We had the Neptune Suite which came with its own private terrace with lounge chairs and a sun umbrella overlooking the ocean. Although we had plans to check out the entire Garden Route strip, as soon as we saw what the guest house was offering us, we dropped our bags and for 3 days straight followed the routine of an amazing brunch prepared by the co-owner, Tersia, followed by a long trek on the beautiful, almost empty, beach, back up to the hotel with a dip in the fantastic pool overlooking the ocean, accompanied by a little sunning on the lounge chairs, then back to the beach, up to our suite's terrace for a chilled glass of wine and some snacks, whilst reading a book and enjoying the view, followed by another trek on the beach. We only left the hotel to get dinner close-by (note: you need a vehicle to get around Wilderness).
More so than the incredible rooms, was the incredible service. As soon as we walked in the door, the co-owner, Albert, knew our names and gave us the warmest welcome. In fact, the great balance of both discreteness and availability of the owners was simply perfect.
And yes, the rooms were not cheap, but then the service and guest house quality was not either. I can without a doubt say we got out value for money. It is not often I would make such a splurge on a hotel, but it was our honeymoon - and spending it in Wilderness at Zanadu, was a dream come true! I would definitely do it again! (Not another honeymoon, that is ;-)

We stayed for 3 nights at Xanadu for my husband's birthday and what a treat it was. From the moment that the huge carved entrance door swung opened and we saw the interior, it was definitely the WOW factor. The exquisite decor with wonderful furniture and accessories was breath-taking. We had the Dolphin suite and our only criticsm was that the shower area was rather small and no dressing robes or slippers and poor toiletries. Otherwise we were very pleased with the room. Breakfast was taken at a communal round table which we rather enjoyed as it allowed guests to share experiences. The food was excellent and started the day well. The beach was just at the bottom of a well-designed garden which included a pool. A wonderful stay which could not have been bettered.
