Lodge On The Lake & Wellness Spa
Ranked #20 of 59 Wilderness B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 18, 2009

We arrived at the Lodge on the Lake expecting it to be first class in every aspect. Friends had stayed in November and had highly recommended it. On first impression it looked amazing. It couldn't be in a better location and the views of the lake from the entrance hall and from the rooms is fantastic. However, there was something missing! There were ants on the balcony and in the bedroom. My husband even found one in the bed! The room was superficially clean but when you looked in the corners it wasn't. A lot of money had obviously been spent on it but we felt the maintainance of this guest house generally hadn't been kept up. We are well travelled and have a lot to compare it with and overall we felt it was disappointing. It wouldn't take much to bring it back up to its original standard. There was chipped crockery at breakfast and the selection of food was medicocre. Compared to other breakfasts we had whilst travelling in South Africa it was pretty poor. The staff were friendly and helpful but it lacked an overall "boss", someone in charge to ensure the standards are kept up. I really hope someone there will read this and take note of my comments. To put it back into the five star bracket wouldn't take much, but it is not there at the moment..

We were at Lodge on the Lake in January. We are two adults and it was fantastic. It was so nice at this hotel, absolutly fantastic. The pool is something special. We had a view, it was unbelieveable and the Spa was out of this world. We had the feeling we were in a dream. The stuff is also wonderful. We have never experienced such incredible service before.
When we wanted to go out, we had a lot of possibilities to experience something. We saw the ostrichs in Oudtshoorn and the saturday market in Sedgefield. On Sunday is a market in WIlderness as well. It was also nice to enter the market. One day we visited Knysna and it was beautiful. Sometimes we only went to the beach, it was possible, too and very nice.
This hotel is an absolute must, when you want to visit South Africa and Wilderness.

We stayed at Lodge on the Lake for two nights on our way through the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth and immediately knew we had chosen well. The design and decor of the hotel is absolutely stunning, with amazing views over the lake. We were lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves due to it being the winter season, but Vivian made us feel so welcome it was like being at home. Her breakfast omelettes are amazing. Wish we could have stayed longer and thoroughly recommend anybody considering staying in Wilderness to book in here.

This was our second stay here, but the first under the new management.

The lodge itself is like a lovely European villa in really neutral colours. The setting is incredibly peaceful with all the rooms and the public spaces overlooking the lake. The are pictures on the website but they don't do it justice. The rooms are large and comfortable and again in a modern minimalist style and the beds are wonderfully comfortable.

Best of all is the service though. Vivianne was a delight - so friendly and helpful. She also cooked wonderful breakfasts (try the omelettes with chilli peppers). Not only that but she gave recommendations for some excellent restaurants in the area.

This really is a hidden treasure, and Wilderness is a really good location for accessing the Garden Route.

We stayed here for two nights and had a lovely time. The lodge is well located being a short walk/drive to the beach and the main centre of Wilderness. In addition it is just 5 minutes from the local park where you can go for some walks, canoeing and go out on the lake etc

The room was large, well decorated and had great views of the lake. The rooms have small balconies from which you can enjoy the views while sipping on refreshments from the mini bar.

The lodge has a spa which we did not get opportunity to use although it appears to have a good range of services and is conveniantly located.

The only down sides were the breakfasts (limited options available and the cooked options was not good) and the staff are not as personable as at other hotels and B&Bs in South Africa.

However, as a well located, well run and modern B&B this is a good place to stay and we enjoyed our time there.

I totally echo the previous review. Our stay at Lodge on the Lake last year was wonderful.

First off, the rooms are fantastic. The web-site really doesn't do it justice. We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite, but Giuliano showed us around each of the rooms. They are all a great size and done very stylishly. I've been to an awful lot of hotels worldwide and can honestly say that our suite there is one of the best I've stayed in.

The Spa is excellent and the public areas are really nicely done too. Breakfast on the terrace is really romantic looking out across the lake. There is also free wi-fi connectivity.

Fortunately the service more than matches the facilities here. Lorette, Giuliano and Ilene were exceptionally friendly and helpful. They had already made provisional reservations at local restaurants in case we needed them and provided lots of information about the local area. They even got special items in for breakfast for us.

I honestly can say that I don't think they could have made our stay any better.

If you are tired of all the seaviews (which are probably similar throughout the world) go and visit this new Tuscany style guest house nestled high above the lake area (just opposite the N2 you find also beautiful beaches) of Wilderness with a unique view to the "Island Lake". It's simply something we haven't seen before.

This Villa is modern with earthtones all over the place, is spacious and very tastfully decorated. It has a small pool and what is still the exception for such small guest houses it's own SPA area.

The rooms are big and all different from each other with wonderful bathrooms (better than almost any 5 star hotel), the views are exceptional.

Breakfast, if weather permit is served on the terrace, a great way to start your day.

This lodge is something for the discerned traveller who is tired of 5 Star hotels and who is seeking the luxury of a small private guesthouse.

A few of the country's best Golf courses are close (George, Oubaai, Simola etc).

Lorette and her team are very welcoming and helpful and have treated us in a wonderful way.

There are very good restaurants around like Girls, Riverside Kitchen and Serendipity although Wilderness itself is a very quiet place.

For us it was by far the best lodge we have ever been to on the Garden Route and we are looking forward to come back soon.
