We loved the tops so much at our first visit (February 2012) that we extended from 3 to 5 nights, and returned again this year.
Views are very important for my wife, and seeing the ocean from the bed was just what she wanted.
Breakfast at the terrace overlooking the town, the beach and the Indian Ocean is what you ask for
at the Garden Route.
We counted 8 different bird species while having breakfast, including two different kinds of sunbirds.
The owner, Dot, is very helpful with advice on restaurants, walking trips and providing umbrellas for the beach and more. If you stay long enough you can learn a lot about Afrikaans family history by listening to her stories.
Only problem for new arrivals: As the house is rather spread out with different levels and stairways through the flowering trees it might take some time to find the entrance.
The unique luggage lift is another nice thing to look out for.

Room Tip: We liked room 1 best. But the newer self catering units looked very good too.

The Tops is situated in the most beautiful part of the Garden Route. Friendly staff welcomed us on arrival. We had a pleasant chat with the owner over breakfast and we appreciated the surroundings. The rooms are neat and tastly decorated with a balcony overlooking the ocean:"breath taking".

Room Tip: Ocean facing

I saw your hotel advertised in a tourist magazine and it looked very nice and reasonably priced. When we turned up, the room through the window looked lovely and a nice place to stay. When I knocked on the door I saw one of your staff and he did not let me in. I let myself in and tried to ask him about the rates of the rooms, the different room types and the breakfast. He would not answer any of my questions, barely spoke two words to me and watched the TV the entire time I was talking to him. When I asked if there was someone else I could talk to he said there wasn't.

We arrived in the evening of the 11th January around 8pm.
