“Nice position..but..needs an upgrade!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2013

Stayed 2 nights at end September 2013. Nice position for walks on the beach and base to travel around Garden Route. This hotel however needs a repair. Taps leak, beds are old, sliding door to balcony is hard to slide etc, etc.
There are many B&B's in Wilderness that offer better accommodation. We got a special deal, otherwise we would have stayed elsewhere.

I stayed at this hotel many moons ago and I thought at the time that what was on offer in terms of quality and service was up their with the best that a 3 star establishment could offer. So now, with a family of four that includes two young boys, I was on the website and again liked what I saw and promptly booked for a 3 day stay.Whilst not a disaster, the comparison between then and now is ver obvious on all fronts. When we arrived, about 40 minutes after the advertised book-in time, the room was not nearly ready and it took all of another 40 minutes before we could check in.The reception area looks ok but the room was really in need of a spruce or two.The bedding was clean but very well used and the bathroom just about sneaked it...but I was alarmed at the number of loose fittings. The television did not work although to be fair after a call it was fixed after about an hour. The setting and pool area is still wonderful after all these years but the new establishment across the way (literally a minute's walk across the lawns) simply adds to the sense that one is just not getting value for your hard earned money.Breakfast was ordinary and lacked a decent selection and although kids under 18 stays for free, this does not include the breakfast though this obviously is no train smash. Here's the rub as far as I'm concerned. The establisment across the way is different class but much more expensive, however the hotels close to the Touw River about 5 kilometres further down the N2 highway towards Cape Town offers much much more in terms of value and quality for about the same or slightly more money. This place is not only tired but the service levels from staff is not quite what one would expect from what is supposed to be a mid-range hotel.

The hotel has a tired and old look and feel. The rooms were clean but the mattress needs replacing. The shower curtain should be replaced by a glass screen as the entire floor was flooded after my shower. Breakfast was nothing to wright about. It was difficult to compare 3 star accommodation in South Africa with similar establishments in Europe or US. The price was very good

We agree with the previous reviewer about the "tired"-ness of the hotel. Although the hotel was very quiet, we were not offered a renovated room - the one we had was clean but I think all the fittings were the same as when we stayed in the (then) Holiday Inn some 30 years ago. Breakfast was very ordinary: the hot water for tea and coffee was lukewarm, the toaster belongs in a museum and the staff would look rather more professional if they took their coats off!
We had a package deal that included dinner, but this was a very sad experience - it was served in the draughty and barn-like bar; the food was very dull and greasy, including overcooked veggies, lumpy gravy and chocolate mousse clearly from a packet. (Poor food is NOT made posh with "sprinkles" or by dusting the plate generously with paprika!)
We also gave up and ate at The Views (across the car-park) and "The Girls" in the village - both highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated one with a sea view. Don't bother with dinner.

The view is breathtaking, which is the primary reason to stay here. The walk down the cliff to the beautiful, wild beach is an invigourating hike; you could stay there all day, it is that mesmerizing. The hotel was undergoing much needed renovation during our stay; the good news is that the renovated rooms are first class all the way, just be sure to ask for one (the upper floors were addressed first, apparently). :) The price was very reasonable for an ocean view (a lovely breakfast was also included!) and the staff very courteous and professional; one of the managers even gladly allowed me the use of her office computer to respond to some business e-mails that my ipad was struggling with for some reason (the lobby computer was out of service during our stay). I would be remiss if I did not mention that "The Views" restaurant is a only a brief walk across the knoll; it is one of the most scenic dining experiences you will ever have, and the food and service are exquisite. In short, stay at the Pearl, walk to beach, dine at "The Views".

Staff very pleasant, room was clean. The place had a tired feeling about it, its old and needs updating. We were there for valentines night, we ate in the restaurant and although that appeared tired too the food was amazing, we had the set menu and it was very cheap and definitely great value for money. Service in the hotel was good. Breakfast good. If the hotel gets a facelift it would earn 5 stars.
