“In tune with Mother Nature”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

A most spectacular and amazing resort, warm and cozy cabins with serene dams for trout fishing or just sitting with a good book and a cup of coffee, tranquil and peaceful and very private chalets with fireplaces and our family cabin had its own jacuzzi, enjoyed the facilities and hike and the horse riding was an experience not to be missed. The views are breathtaking beautiful and it feels you are at home with Mother Nature . A big thank you to the cleaning service and also to Russell our horse ride guide.

Room Tip: Get a cabin with the jacuzzi as it helps after a long hike and horse riding.

Great resort. My husband enjoyed the fly fishing - the dams are stocked regularly. Accommodation was more than comfortable. But the setting is the best of all - we went in Autumn and the colours were just stunning. Lots of things and activities for kids as well.

A picturesque destination, ideal for rest and relaxation! Beautiful mini lakes and 1 massive lake all stocked with trout. Units are well maintained with fireplace and braai (barbecue) facilities. The staff are quite helpful and friendly. The on-site restaurant has a limited menu but a spectacular view of the Drakensberg mountains.

Upon arrival we were very well received with either a cool fruit juice or sherry and the formalities were processed efficiently and in a friendly manner.

The chalet was well appointed, clean and comfortable. Without asking a member of the staff arrived at the chalet and assisted us unpacking our vehicle. The Manageress arrived shortly thereafter to enquire whether everything was to our satisfaction.

The resort was spotlessly clean, neat and tidy, the lawns and gardens are manicured.

The resort amenities cater for all tastes and include a kiddies area, tennis, horse riding, interesting walks and fly fishing.

The views of the mountains from the chalets are spectacular.

I have no hesitation in recommending this resort.

We spent another excellent week at this beautiful resort having been there in June and a number of times before that. We have already made our reservations for next year. The staff and management are all totally focused on making ones stay a memorable one. Whether you visit in summer or winter the beauty and tranquillity refreshes both body and mind. The revamped Reception and Club House/Restaurant area is great. The Tuesday bring and braai is a must.

My husband and I spent a few days at the resort. It was perfect. The clean fresh air, the mountains, the quiet nature. The villa was serviced daily and was very clean. We went horseback riding and enjoyed our stay here.

The villa was quite large. There was a jacuzzi which was filled when we arrived, however the water was cold and for some reason could not be re-filled. I found this strange. This is my only complaint.

We will return though, this time with our kids!

I recently had a two week stay at Castleburn. Apart from the very comfortable accommodation, friendly service and beautiful views, I also enjoyed excellent fly fishing.
The Staff are all very accommodating and helpful. Gwen the manager of the resort however stands out from everyone and goes out of his way to ensure you are well looked after and that you enjoy the most out of your stay.
The accommodation is very homely and spacious. Even though the mornings were below 0 deg, inside stayed warm throughout the day.
Over the first weeks fishing we got one fish over 3kg and another 4 around the 2kg mark. The main lake is well managed and the fish are all in good condition. I would not advise the main lake for inexperienced fly fishermen as you need to put in the effort and time to catch the bigger fish. The smaller waters are also well stocked and I had a fantastic time with the kids, with both my son (4) and Daughter (3), with a bit of assistance from Dad, caught their first trout.
Overall it was a fantastic experience and I would recommend anyone who enjoys fly fishing and the outdoors to get across to Catleburn for their vacation or getaway.

Regards

Gary Burns

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the foothills of the southern Drakensberg nestles Castleburn a home to eland, reedbuck and 100 species of bird, who flock to the re-established wetlands. Spacious, thatched, architect-designed cottages, built of hand-hewn local stone, cluster around Lake Madingofani. Its shimmering surface reflects the rocky summits of the Garden Castle and is disturbed only by the breeze and the occasional trout jumping. The estate borders on a Natal Parks Board nature reserve, neighboring the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site proclaimed in year 2000 and the famous Giant's Cup hiking trail which passes through it. For chilly Berg evenings, the private, luxuriously furnished cottages have a stone fireplace; there is also an impressively equipped kitchen. A convivial lakeside clubhouse encourages friendly get-togethers. If you love peace and unpolluted air, bathing in crystal clear streams, fishing, riding, sailing, hiking, tennis, Archery, swimming.... You'll find the perfect holiday at Castleburn. The resort has wholeownership, syndication, timeshare, and fractional ownership options available on a shareblock basis. Castleburn is rated a Gold Crown resort by RCI. ... more   less
