“Great place for a break”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

We had a break up at Castleburn, and were very happy with the stay. Our holiday was with 2 other couples, and the unit we were issued was more than sufficient space wise for 6 of us.

The units were neat and clean, and were specked out with good furniture and equipment.

We were right on the doorstep of the trout fishing lakes, and although the fishing was not great ( i only got 1 small fish in 3 days ) I had a great time trying. Some of our friends went horse riding, and we also went on a lovely mountain bike ride around the lakes and property

At the main office there is a lovely little restaurant overlooking the main lake. The staff go out of their way to help you with whatever you need ( we forgot to bring fresh cream with, and kindly the kitchen staff gave us a big cup to help us out )

Its definitely a place we would return to

Our first stay at the resort. A beautiful setting with comfortable chalets. However the chalets could do with better lighting in the living area for reading. The patio furniture was terrible and not 5 star. The mattress in the main bedroom was way past its change date, both my wife and I suffered from back ache as a result of this, not 5 star. The cleaning lady needs more supervision, got upset when my wife pointed out that the glasses she had washed were still dirty, after that did not bother to put the glasses away after cleaning.

Management were conspicuous by their absence. We never saw a manager in the 7 days we were there. How can they expect things to run smoothly and get guest feedback if they do not attempt to communicate with the guests. When my wife asked a question about the birdlife to a pleasant admin lady, her answer, after consulting the general manager, was not at all helpful especially in light of the bird list in the chalet.

The restaurant also has potential, however the Trout was badly overcooked on two occasions, on the second occasion my wife spoke to the chef when ordering and requested her not to overcook the Trout, to no benefit. The vegetables were oily. The other dishes were good, the Group that runs the resort needs to send in an executive chef to improve the overall standard of the food. Another gripe was that notwithstanding cold and rainy weather, the fire in the dining restaurant was not lit. Also closing the kitchen at 08:00 pm is ridiculous, we had the least memorable wedding anniversary celebration in 32 years.

The staff in the main are willing and friendly, definitely need more training and supervision.

In summary with a dedicated, hands on management team this resort has the potential to be a gem. Until this happens guests will be disappointed.

Room Tip: Stay in the chalets which overlook the dams, and not in the smaller apartments behind the chalets.

From the snow-capped mountains to the Sani Pass nearby, Castleburn is in one of the most scenic areas of Natal and South Africa. It snowed a week before we arrived and the temperatures remained low enough that the snow stuck around for us. The snow-capped peaks in the background created a dramatic setting and waking up, I could swear that I was back in Austria or Switzerland. If the quality of the resort and the service was sub-par, we could not have noticed for finding ourselves mesmerized by the back-drop of beauty and peace. But the quality and service of the resort was not sub-par. The rooms were neat and very, very clean with all of the amenities that we could need and the staff were incredibly friendly and more than helpful. I will definitely be back with my family and hopefully with some snow, too.

We stayed for 4 nights. The rooms were a bit tired and dark compared to other hotels in the area. We had maintenance guys working on out water heater for 2 days and although they were friendly and apologetic the hotel should have moved us to another room. Our jacuzzi didn't work either which was disappointing.
The common areas need an upgrade too-there is no comfortable lounge to relax in on days your dont want to be outside.

Staff however were super friendly and Castleburn has some of the best views in the burg. Surrounded by water there are some great spots to relax and take in the fresh air.

On check-in we were greeted with a welcome glass of sherry, so setting the tone for a great week. Ok so we went in winter but it was fabulous. Horse riding on site, wonderful local hikes including one at the nearby world heritage site, kayaking, walking in nearby streams - all in all a wonderful destination for old and young alike (our party ranged from 6 - 81) While we did not have fly fishing rods the setting for early morning anglers looked beautiful. Only disappointment was the price to do some laundry - way overpriced for a self catering resort. (although we did not get to use the restaurant - too many good local supplies of delicious food for self-catering, including good old Puckety's in Underberg- their trout offerings on the menu seemed reasonable).

We stayed in this establishment for 5 days and it was during high summer, the ambience was very peaceful. The cleaning staff were extremely courteous and friendly. The units were cleaned everyday during our stay. The food at the restarant was not very good and the choice on the menu not too wide...very limiting. The stay in general was extremely relaxing and rejuvenating

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the foothills of the southern Drakensberg nestles Castleburn a home to eland, reedbuck and 100 species of bird, who flock to the re-established wetlands. Spacious, thatched, architect-designed cottages, built of hand-hewn local stone, cluster around Lake Madingofani. Its shimmering surface reflects the rocky summits of the Garden Castle and is disturbed only by the breeze and the occasional trout jumping. The estate borders on a Natal Parks Board nature reserve, neighboring the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site proclaimed in year 2000 and the famous Giant's Cup hiking trail which passes through it. For chilly Berg evenings, the private, luxuriously furnished cottages have a stone fireplace; there is also an impressively equipped kitchen. A convivial lakeside clubhouse encourages friendly get-togethers. If you love peace and unpolluted air, bathing in crystal clear streams, fishing, riding, sailing, hiking, tennis, Archery, swimming.... You'll find the perfect holiday at Castleburn. The resort has wholeownership, syndication, timeshare, and fractional ownership options available on a shareblock basis. Castleburn is rated a Gold Crown resort by RCI. ... more   less
